Overview
Pulse beetle, also called bruchid, is a small brownish beetle whose grubs develop inside pulse grain and eat it from within. Infestation often actually begins in the field, on grain still in the pod, but it is in storage that numbers explode, since the beetles breed fast in a warm, dry, undisturbed grain heap.
The tell-tale sign is neat, round exit holes in the grain and a fine dust of frass (insect waste) in the store. Left unchecked, a healthy-looking stored lot of moong or gram can go from a few damaged grains to mostly holed and hollow within a few months, losing weight, market grade and, for seed grain, germination.
How to identify it
- Small brownish beetles, and neat round exit holes in the grain, are the clearest sign in a store.
- A fine dust of frass (insect waste) collects around and inside the storage container.
- Infestation often actually begins in the field, on grain still in the pod, and then multiplies fast once the grain is stored.
- Left unchecked, a stored lot can go from a few damaged grains to mostly holed and hollow within a few months.

Organic & cultural control
- Dry grain thoroughly (to about 9–10% moisture) before storing — damp grain is what lets the beetle multiply fast.
- Store in airtight containers, which starve the beetles and grubs of the oxygen they need.
- Mix in neem leaves or a little inert ash in traditional stores, and give small lots brief solar heating or sun exposure to kill developing stages.
- Keep seed and food grain lots separate, and never carry over an infested lot into a new store without treating it first.
Chemical control
- Fumigation of the stored lot with an approved fumigant in a properly sealed store controls a heavy infestation — this is a job for correctly labelled products, safe handling and, ideally, trained help.
- Fumigation is for bulk stored grain, not food already in the kitchen — always follow label safety instructions and aeration times before use.
