Overview
The red palm weevil is the most lethal pest of coconut and other palms. The large reddish-brown adult is drawn to wounds and to the odour of decaying palm tissue, and lays its eggs in cracks, cut surfaces and the bore holes left by the rhinoceros beetle. The grubs then tunnel deep into the trunk and crown, eating out the soft internal tissue in large numbers.
The terrible feature of this pest is that all of this happens out of sight. Early signs are subtle — oozing brown fluid and chewed fibrous frass from bore holes, a fermenting smell, holes in the crown, and later drooping/yellowing inner fronds. By the time the crown wilts and collapses, the inside of the palm has been hollowed out and it usually cannot be saved. Control therefore rests on preventing wounds and rhinoceros-beetle holes, detecting infestation as early as possible, treating early-stage palms, and removing and destroying dead ones so they do not breed more weevils.
How to identify it
- Oozing reddish-brown fluid and chewed, fibrous frass coming from holes in the trunk or crown, often with a fermenting/rotting smell.
- Holes and tunnels in the trunk, sometimes with the sound of grubs feeding inside a quiet palm.
- Later, drooping and yellowing of the inner/central fronds, and finally a wilting, toppling crown — by which point the palm is usually lost.
- Large reddish-brown weevils with a long snout near wounded palms; the grubs are large, legless and cream-coloured inside the trunk.
The damage it does
- Extensive internal tunnelling that hollows the trunk and crown, killing the palm — usually before clear external symptoms appear.

When to act
- Prevention first — avoid injuring the trunk and crown, and control the rhinoceros beetle whose holes let the weevil in.
- Inspect palms regularly for the early signs (oozing holes, frass, fermenting smell) so a palm can be treated while still saveable.
- Act immediately on a suspected early infestation, and remove and destroy dead palms at once so they do not breed more weevils.
Organic & cultural control
- Prevent entry points — avoid cutting or injuring the trunk and crown, do not cut green leaves close to the trunk, and control the rhinoceros beetle and close its bore holes.
- Set pheromone traps (ferrugineol lures, often with fermenting bait) to detect and mass-trap adults across the plantation.
- Fill leaf axils/wounds with sand or a recommended deterrent, and seal any cut surfaces promptly.
- Cut down and destroy (chip/burn) dead and unsavable infested palms without delay, as they are major breeding sources.
Chemical control
- An early-detected, still-saveable palm can sometimes be treated by placing/injecting a recommended, registered insecticide into the affected part of the crown/trunk, per the official protocol.
- Because success depends entirely on catching it early, prevention (wound and beetle control), pheromone-trap monitoring and prompt removal of dead palms carry the real load.
- Follow the official recommendation exactly for any trunk/crown treatment on a food-bearing palm, and observe safety intervals.
