Overview

The rhinoceros beetle is a large, robust black beetle — the male has a distinct horn on its head — that is a major pest of coconut and other palms. The adult beetle bores into the crown of the palm, through the base of the youngest fronds, to feed on the soft, developing tissue at the growing point.

When the bored, folded frond later opens, the feeding shows as a characteristic V-shaped or fan-like cut across the leaflets — the classic diagnostic. Repeated boring reduces the palm’s vigour and yield, provides entry points for the deadly red palm weevil and bud rot, and in severe cases, or on young palms, can kill the crown. Crucially, the beetle breeds in decaying organic matter — manure pits, dead palm logs, compost heaps — so destroying these breeding sites is the heart of control.

How to identify it

  • A characteristic V-shaped or fan-like cut across the leaflets of a newly-opened frond — the tell-tale sign of crown boring.
  • Bore holes at the base of the youngest fronds/crown, sometimes with chewed fibre pushed out.
  • Large black beetles with a horn (on the male) in the crown or in nearby manure/compost pits and rotting logs.
  • On young palms, a bored, damaged growing point and stunted, distorted new growth.

The damage it does

  • V-cut, damaged fronds and a bored crown that reduce the palm’s vigour and nut yield.
  • Bore holes that open the crown to the far deadlier red palm weevil and to bud rot.
  • Death of the growing point in severe attacks, especially on young palms — a total loss of the palm.
  • Continuous re-infestation where breeding sites (manure pits, dead logs) are close by.

When to act

  • The most important action is ongoing sanitation of breeding sites — manure pits, compost heaps and dead palm logs around the plantation.
  • Inspect crowns for fresh bore holes and V-cut fronds, and hook out beetles from the crown promptly.
  • Be especially vigilant on young palms and after storms that leave decaying palm debris for breeding.

Organic & cultural control

  • Destroy or treat breeding sites — do not leave dead palm logs, manure pits or compost heaps as beetle nurseries; turn and treat them, or seed them with the green muscardine fungus (Metarhizium) and the beetle’s baculovirus where available.
  • Hook out beetles from the crown with a beetle hook, and place attractant/pheromone traps to catch adults.
  • Fill the topmost leaf axils with sand mixed with a recommended botanical (or neem cake) to deter fresh boring.
  • Apply biological agents (Metarhizium fungus, Oryctes baculovirus) to breeding sites for long-term suppression.

Chemical control

  • Placing a recommended insecticide-treated material or naphthalene balls in the leaf axils, as advised, deters and kills beetles entering the crown.
  • Because the adult bores into the crown and breeds in litter, breeding-site sanitation and crown hooking do the main work; chemicals are a supplement.
  • Follow the label and local recommendation for any crown treatment on a food-bearing palm.

Frequently asked questions

That V-shaped or fan-like cut is the signature of the rhinoceros beetle. The beetle bores into the crown through the base of the youngest, still-folded frond to feed; when that frond later opens, the feeding shows as the V-cut across the leaflets. Hook the beetles out of the crown and, above all, destroy the breeding sites where they multiply.

Where does the rhinoceros beetle breed, and why does it matter?

It breeds in decaying organic matter — manure pits, compost heaps, dead palm logs and similar litter around the plantation. This is the key to control: destroying or treating these breeding sites (including seeding them with Metarhizium fungus or the Oryctes baculovirus) cuts the next generation at source, far more effectively than only dealing with beetles already in the crowns.

Why is the rhinoceros beetle dangerous beyond its own feeding?

Because the bore holes it makes in the crown open the palm to two far deadlier problems — the red palm weevil, whose grubs can kill the palm from inside, and bud rot disease. So controlling the rhinoceros beetle (and closing/treating its bore holes) is also a key step in preventing red palm weevil and bud rot.
