About this variety
IC 310623 is an aloe vera accession in the ICAR-NBPGR gene bank. IC means Indigenous Collection. It is not a released variety. From 2019 to 2021, ICAR-DMAPR at Boriavi, near Anand in Gujarat, grew 26 aloe accessions in two replications and cut them at about 18 months. IC 310623 had the highest aloin content (27.07% against a trial average of 21.36%), the highest aloin yield (74.80 kg/ha against 53.61) and the most sap per plant (10.31 g against 7.28). Its fresh gel yield was 91.07 t/ha, second only to IC 310618, and its leaf yield was 114.52 t/ha against an average of 78.62. The authors pick it as the superior accession for both medicinal and cosmetic use. Aloin is the main compound in the yellow-brown sap that leaks from a cut leaf. It matters only if someone pays for it. These are small-plot results from one site, and we found no leaf rot score for this accession, so use them to choose planting material for a trial block, not to forecast income.
Should you pick this variety?
Choose IC 310623 if your buyer pays for the dried yellow sap, because at Boriavi it had the highest aloin content (27.07% against a trial average of 21.36%) and the highest aloin yield (74.80 kg/ha against 53.61). If your buyer pays for gel only, it is still a fair choice, since its fresh gel yield (91.07 t/ha) is too close to IC 310618 (93.55) and IC 310619 (90.20) to separate them. We found no leaf rot score for it, so it is the wrong pick if leaf rot is your worry: look at IC 112531. Ask the buyer in writing whether the sap is paid for before you plant a block, and start with 20 suckers.
Key characteristics
Sowing & cultivation
- Sowing timeJune–July or September–October (TNAU).
- SpacingTNAU gives 90 × 90 cm on prepared beds, 10,000 suckers per hectare. The Boriavi trial used 60 × 45 cm.
- Sowing methodPlant suckers 8 to 10 cm long, as in the Boriavi trial. Dip them in 0.1% carbendazim for 5 minutes before planting (TNAU).
- IrrigationMainly rainfed. Give 4 to 5 irrigations in the summer months (TNAU).
- HarvestingTNAU: first harvest 6 to 7 months after planting, and gel extraction within 6 hours of cutting. The Boriavi plants were cut at about 18 months.
Soil & climate
Soil
- Suitable soil
- Well-drained laterite to loamy soil, pH 7.0 to 8.5. Waterlogging rots the plant (TNAU).
Yield & maturity

Expected yield
At Boriavi, Gujarat: 91.07 t/ha fresh gel, second of 26 accessions, and the highest aloin yield (74.80 kg/ha), worked out for 60 × 45 cm spacing
Actual yield depends on sowing time, soil, irrigation, weather, seed quality and crop management.
Pest & disease considerations
Major diseases
- No leaf rot score found; it is not among the 16 genotypes named resistant or moderately resistant at Kumarganj
Advantages & considerations
Why farmers may choose it
- Highest aloin content (27.07%) and highest aloin yield (74.80 kg/ha) of 26 accessions at Boriavi.
- Fresh gel yield of 91.07 t/ha, second of 26 and too close to the leader to separate.
- About 8.57 suckers a plant, so it gives planting material for the next bed. The trial average was 6.75.
Things to consider
- The aloin edge earns money only if a buyer pays for the dried sap. A buyer who wants gel alone gives you nothing for it.
- We found no leaf rot score for IC 310623. It is not among the 16 genotypes the Kumarganj screening named as resistant or moderately resistant.
- The per-hectare figures are worked out from five plants per plot at 60 × 45 cm spacing, about 37,000 plants a hectare. TNAU's 90 × 90 cm gives 10,000.
- The aloin lead over NMRM 2 (73.10 kg/ha) is smaller than the trial's 5% margin of 9.86 kg/ha.
- ICAR-DMAPR sells aloe vera suckers, but its price list does not name an accession. Ask before you buy.

Gel buyer or sap buyer: which number should you chase?
An aloe leaf gives two products. The clear gel inside is what most juice, skin and cream buyers want. The yellow-brown sap that leaks from the cut edge dries into a bitter solid whose main compound is aloin. The Boriavi trial measured both, which is why IC 310623 is of interest: its aloin content was 27.07% against a trial average of 21.36%, and its aloin yield was 74.80 kg/ha against 53.61.
The extra aloin helps you only if someone pays for the sap. If your buyer takes gel and nothing else, the aloin figure is worth nothing to you, and IC 310623 is then one of three accessions that cannot be told apart on gel (91.07, 93.55 and 90.20 t/ha, with a 5% margin of 10.26). If a buyer does pay for the dried sap, ask in writing how much aloin they need and what price they pay, and check the sap quality you can deliver before planting a block.
A fair test on your land: plant 20 suckers beside your present plants, 90 × 90 cm apart, and keep the bed drained. At your first cut weigh the gel per plant and extract it within 6 hours, as TNAU advises. Keep the sap from those plants apart and ask your buyer what they would pay for it. Decide on that price, not on the table.
Can you save seed from this crop?
This one is raised from planting material — suckers, grafts, cuttings or tubers — not from a seed packet. Take it from a registered nursery or a government farm, so the plant is true to the variety and free of disease.

Frequently asked questions
What is aloin, and why does IC 310623 rank first for it?
Aloin is the main compound in the yellow-brown sap that leaks from a cut aloe leaf. At Boriavi, Gujarat, IC 310623 had 27.07% aloin in its dried sap against a trial average of 21.36%, and gave 74.80 kg/ha of aloin against 53.61. The accessions NMRM 2, IC 285629 and GUJ 1 were close behind on aloin yield, so the lead is small. It is worth chasing only if a buyer pays for the sap.
How much gel does IC 310623 give?
At Boriavi it gave 91.07 t/ha of fresh gel, second of 26 accessions, against a trial average of 62.74 t/ha. Leaf weight was 290.91 g against 205.63 g, and leaf yield 114.52 t/ha against 78.62. These are plot results scaled up for 60 × 45 cm spacing and 18-month plants, so a farm at 90 × 90 cm will get far less per hectare. Use them to rank accessions, not to plan income.
Is IC 310623 resistant to leaf rot?
We do not know. The Kumarganj screening of 26 genotypes (kharif 2014 and 2015) named 16 as resistant or moderately resistant, and IC 310623 was not one of them. The rest were moderately susceptible to highly susceptible, but the abstract does not list them or say whether IC 310623 was in the trial. Treat it as untested, keep the bed well drained, and see IC 112531 if leaf rot is already a problem on your land.
Is IC 310623 better than IC 310618 for gel?
No. IC 310618 gave 93.55 t/ha of fresh gel and IC 310623 gave 91.07 t/ha. The trial's 5% margin for gel was 10.26 t/ha, so a gap of 2.48 t/ha is too small to call. If you sell gel only, choose between them on other things, such as the leaf rot score, where IC 310618 was moderately resistant and IC 310623 has no score.
Does IC 310623 give enough suckers to multiply?
In the Boriavi trial it carried 8.57 suckers a plant at about 18 months, against a trial average of 6.75. That is among the higher counts, so one bed can seed a bigger one. Cut suckers only from healthy plants with no leaf rot. ICAR-DMAPR, Boriavi, Anand, Gujarat, sells aloe vera suckers at Rs 5 each, and Rs 3 each above 500 (price list dated 9 May 2024). The list names no accession, so call 02692-271602, ask whether IC 310623 is available, and get the source in writing.
