Overview

Agrisilviculture is the base agroforestry system: a farmer keeps growing field crops in the usual rotation, but a tree component — timber, fruit, or fodder trees — is added to the same land instead of being kept apart in a separate plot. It is the system most Indian farmers already practise in some form, even if only as a handful of neem, mango or shisham trees standing in a field, without thinking of it as "agroforestry".

The working version of the system is more deliberate: trees are planted in rows or blocks with a known spacing, so machinery can still pass between them and the crop underneath still gets a workable share of sunlight. As the trees mature, the balance shifts — the crop strip narrows in influence and the tree component starts contributing more of the plot's income, through timber, fruit or fodder.

It suits farmers who want to diversify income and buffer a bad crop year, but it is a multi-year commitment: a timber block will not pay back for a decade or more, and the crop-yield discount near maturing trees has to be planned for, not discovered too late.

How the layout works

  • Trees go in straight rows, spaced wide enough that sunlight still reaches most of the crop strip between them — 5m × 5m for closer-spaced fodder or fruit trees, up to 8m × 8m or more for eventual timber trees that will need full canopy room.
  • Rows usually run north–south so the moving shade from each row spends roughly equal time on both sides of the crop strip through the day, rather than permanently shading one side.
  • A block layout (trees in a dense patch, crops around it) suits a farmer planting mainly for timber and treating the crop as a secondary, shrinking use of that land over time.
  • A boundary-plus-scattered layout — a tree at the edge of every third or fourth row — keeps almost all the field in full sun and is the easiest way to start without committing serious acreage.

Choosing the tree component

  • Timber species (teak, eucalyptus, poplar, shisham) pay the least in the early years but the most at final harvest — plan for these on land you are not depending on for near-term cash.
  • Fruit trees (mango, guava, ber, amla) start returning income in 3–5 years and give a Rabi or off-season income stream the field crop does not.
  • Fodder trees (subabul, drumstick/moringa) suit farms that also keep livestock — leaves can be cut for fodder without felling the tree, so the income starts almost immediately.
  • Match root depth to the crop: deep-rooted trees like neem and teak compete less for surface moisture and nutrients with a shallow-rooted crop than a shallow-rooted tree would.

Managing the crop under maturing trees

  • Shade-tolerant crops (turmeric, ginger, many pulses) hold their yield better under a thickening canopy than full-sun crops like wheat or cotton — plan a crop switch for later years rather than assuming the same crop will keep performing.
  • Pruning the lower branches each season keeps the canopy high and narrow, which protects more of the light reaching the crop strip than leaving the tree to bush out.
  • Root pruning (cutting a trench along the tree row every 2–3 years) reduces underground competition for water and nutrients without harming the tree.
  • Expect the crop yield closest to the tree row to fall first — plan the highest-value crop for the strip furthest from the trees and a more shade-tolerant one closer in.

Frequently asked questions

Will trees reduce my crop yield?

Near the tree row, usually yes, once the canopy closes — sunlight and moisture there are shared. Further from the row, well-managed agrisilviculture often shows little or no yield loss, and the tree income offsets what is lost near the row. Wide spacing and a north–south row direction limit how much of the field is affected.

How many years before the trees start paying?

Depends on the species: fodder trees can be cut for leaf within a year of planting, fruit trees typically start bearing in 3–5 years, and timber species are a 10-year-plus horizon. Mixing a fast-return species with a long-term timber block is a common way to bridge the gap.

Can I use a tractor between the rows?

Yes, if the spacing is planned for it from the start — 5m or wider between rows leaves enough room for most implements. Retrofitting wide spacing into an already-planted narrow-spaced block is not practical, so this has to be decided at planting, not after.

Which crops handle shade best as the trees grow?

Turmeric, ginger, and most pulses tolerate partial shade reasonably well. Full-sun field crops like wheat, cotton and most oilseeds lose yield fastest as the canopy closes, so many farmers plan to shift the crop grown near the tree rows after the first 4–5 years.
