Overview
Boundary planting keeps trees strictly to the field's edge — the bund, the fence line, the path border — and leaves the entire cropped interior untouched. It is the system that asks the least of a farmer: no change to the crop rotation, no yield-loss zone spreading through the middle of the field, and a spacing decision that only affects a narrow strip most farmers were not cropping productively anyway.
Because it takes so little committed land, it is usually the first agroforestry system a farmer tries, and the one that requires the least convincing — the trees pay for themselves in fuel, small timber, fodder or fruit without a visible cost in field-crop output.
The trade-off is scale: a boundary planting on a small or medium field yields a modest number of trees, so the income it adds is a genuine bonus, not a plot-level income replacement the way a full agrisilviculture block can eventually become.
How to lay out a boundary planting
- Trees go in a single line along the bund or fence, typically 2–3m apart — close enough to form a useful windbreak effect over time, wide enough that individual trees still get room to grow a proper canopy.
- Choose the field side that gets the most sun exposure and least drainage water pooling — that side establishes fastest and suffers the least waterlogging around the root collar.
- On field boundaries shared with a neighbour, agree spacing and species in advance — a fast-spreading or heavily-shading species planted right on a shared line can affect the neighbour's crop as much as your own.
- Leave a narrow unploughed strip (roughly a metre) between the tree line and the first crop row, so tillage does not repeatedly damage surface roots.
Choosing species that stay out of the crop
- Fast-growing timber species (eucalyptus, casuarina, poplar) are the most common choice — they establish quickly, cast a narrow shadow footprint compared to a wide-canopy species, and give a usable harvest in 6-10 years.
- Fruit trees along a boundary (mango, guava, jamun) work well where the field is not shared with a neighbour on that side, since fruiting trees eventually cast wider shade than a pure timber species.
- Avoid species with an aggressive lateral root system close to the boundary — some fast-growing timber species send roots well into the adjoining crop row and compete for water and nutrients underground even while casting little shade above.
- Thorny or dense hedge species (subabul kept low, or a mixed hedge) double as boundary planting and stock-proof fencing on farms that also graze livestock.
What it does and does not replace
- Boundary planting alone rarely produces enough volume to be a serious secondary income stream — treat it as a genuine but modest addition, not a substitute for a dedicated timber block if that is the goal.
- It does not meaningfully reduce cropped area, so it does not carry the yield-loss planning that agrisilviculture's in-field rows require — this is its main practical advantage over other systems.
- On very small holdings the boundary length itself limits how many trees fit, which caps the eventual return — factor this in before expecting boundary planting alone to fund a major purchase.
