Overview

Fruit rot in ber is caused by fungal pathogens that enter fruit through skin damage, insect wounds (including from fruit fly and stone weevil activity) or over-ripe tissue, either while the fruit is still on the tree or after storage. It shows as soft, discoloured, spreading patches that lower the fruit's market grade and, in a bad case, make it unsellable.

Humid conditions favour the fungi directly and also tend to coincide with periods when fruit is more likely to be picked wet or stored without adequate drying — a real risk since ber, unlike most tree fruit, is genuinely grown in a dry, arid belt where growers may not always be watching for a wet-weather disease. Prompt, careful harvesting that avoids bruising and skin damage, along with dry storage, are the main practical defences.

How to identify it

  • Soft, discoloured, spreading patches on ripening fruit on the tree or on stored fruit.
  • Rot often starts at a point of skin damage — an insect puncture, bruise or over-ripe area.
  • Spreads across the fruit within a few days in warm, humid or damp-storage conditions.
  • Bruised or unevenly-dried fruit in storage is affected first and worst.
