Overview

False smut is a fungal disease of rice that appears at the grain-filling stage. It transforms individual grains in the panicle into large velvety balls — first orange-yellow to greenish-yellow, later turning greenish-black — that are much bigger than a normal grain and rupture to release a powdery spore mass. Usually only a few grains per panicle are affected, but in a susceptible, lush crop the number rises.

It has become more common as farmers grow high-yielding varieties with heavy nitrogen. It is favoured by wet, humid weather, rain and high humidity around flowering, and by excess nitrogen and dense stands. Beyond the direct loss of the affected grains, the spore balls can contaminate the grain and, in some situations, the produce. It carries over on infected debris and seed, so management combines balanced nutrition, resistant varieties, clean seed and a well-timed protective fungicide at booting-to-heading.

How to identify it

  • Individual grains in the panicle swollen into large velvety balls, far bigger than a normal grain.
  • Balls first orange-yellow to greenish-yellow, later greenish-black, rupturing to a powdery spore mass.
  • Usually only a scatter of grains per panicle affected, more in a lush, susceptible crop.
  • Appears at grain-filling, especially after wet, humid weather around flowering.

What causes it and when

  • The fungus Ustilaginoidea virens, spread by air- and rain-splashed spores and carried on infected debris and seed.
  • Favoured by wet, humid weather, rain and high humidity around flowering (booting to heading).
  • Made worse by excess nitrogen, late/heavy top-dressing and dense, lush stands.
  • More common in high-yielding varieties and in years with a wet flowering period.

Cultural & organic control

  • Use balanced fertiliser — avoid excess and late nitrogen, which drives the disease.
  • Grow tolerant/resistant varieties where available and use clean, healthy seed.
  • Avoid over-dense planting so the canopy is open and dries after rain.
  • Collect and destroy visibly infected panicles and debris to reduce carry-over.

Chemical control

  • The effective window is protective: spray at booting to early heading, before the spore balls form — a spray after they appear does little.
  • CIB&RC-registered fungicides for rice (e.g. propiconazole or copper-based/other recommended products) are used at booting where the disease is expected.
  • Time the spray with the weather and crop stage, and observe the pre-harvest interval.
  • Confirm the current product, dose and timing for your area with your local KVK.

Prevent it coming back

  • Keep nitrogen balanced and split correctly, and avoid the lush, over-fed crop the fungus loves.
  • Use tolerant varieties and clean seed, and open up plant spacing.
  • Where the disease is regular, plan the protective booting-stage spray in advance rather than reacting after spore balls appear.

The spray only works as a protectant, before the spore balls form — so the window is booting to early heading. A fungicide applied after you can already see the green-black balls does very little. Where false smut is expected (a susceptible variety, heavy nitrogen, a wet flowering period), plan a registered fungicide spray at booting; confirm the product, dose and timing with your KVK.
