Overview
Mango malformation is an important and long-recognised disorder of mango, linked to the fungus Fusarium mangiferae (with a possible role of mites and hormonal imbalance). It comes in two forms. Vegetative malformation, seen mostly on young plants and nursery stock, produces a bunched rosette of short, swollen, stunted shoots with small, narrow leaves crowded at the tip. Floral malformation, the more economically damaging form, turns the flower panicle into a compact, highly-branched, thickened, greenish head with many small, mostly sterile flowers.
The malformed floral panicles set little or no fruit and remain on the tree, so a heavily affected tree flowers profusely but yields very poorly. The disorder is spread mainly through infected planting material (scions/grafts) and is more of a chronic, tree-level problem than a fast epidemic. Because there is no simple cure, management centres on using clean, disease-free planting material, pruning out and destroying malformed shoots and panicles well below the affected part, and keeping trees healthy.
How to identify it
