Overview
Panama wilt (Fusarium wilt) of banana is caused by the soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc). It enters through the roots and colonises the water-conducting (vascular) tissue, blocking it. The first visible sign is a yellowing of the older, lower leaves that spreads from the leaf margin inward; the leaves then collapse and hang down around the pseudostem like a skirt, while the youngest leaves may stay green for a while.
A characteristic sign is a lengthwise splitting of the pseudostem base, and — when the pseudostem or rhizome is cut across — reddish-brown to dark streaks and discoloration of the internal vascular tissue. The fungus survives in the soil for many years as resting spores (chlamydospores) and is spread by infected suckers, soil, water and tools. There is no effective cure or spray once a plant is infected; management rests on planting clean, disease-free (tissue-culture) suckers, resistant varieties, good soil health/drainage, and not moving infested soil or suckers into clean fields.
How to identify it

What causes it and when
- The soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, which enters the roots and blocks the vascular tissue.

- Spread by infected suckers, and by soil, water, tools and machinery carrying the fungus.
- Worse on susceptible varieties and in fields already carrying the fungus.
Cultural & organic control
- Plant only disease-free, certified tissue-culture plants or clean suckers from a healthy source — never suckers from a wilt-affected field.
- Grow resistant/tolerant varieties where available — the most reliable defence against a soil-borne wilt.
- Maintain good drainage and soil health, and add organic matter and bio-agents (e.g. Trichoderma) to suppress the fungus.
- Rogue out and destroy affected plants with the rhizome, and avoid moving infested soil, suckers or water into clean fields.
Chemical control
- There is no effective spray to cure a Panama-wilt-infected plant — control is preventive and variety/soil-based.
- Where recommended, sucker/soil treatment with a fungicide or bio-agent can reduce establishment, but cannot rescue an infected plant.
- Focus on clean planting material, resistant varieties and soil health rather than chemicals.

Prevent it coming back
- Base new plantings on resistant varieties and clean tissue-culture plants, especially in infested areas.
- Keep the soil healthy and well-drained, build up bio-agents, and rogue affected plants with their rhizomes.

Panama wilt is managed with resistant varieties, clean suckers and soil health; bunchy top by roguing, virus-free suckers and aphid control.
Why can’t I just spray a fungicide to control Panama wilt?
Because the fungus lives inside the plant’s vascular tissue and survives for years in the soil as resting spores, so a foliar spray cannot reach or cure it, and it will re-infect from the soil. That is why control is preventive: plant resistant varieties and clean tissue-culture material, keep the soil healthy and well-drained with bio-agents, rogue affected plants with their rhizomes, and never carry infested soil or suckers into clean fields.
