Black pepper foot rot (quick wilt)
A soil-borne Phytophthora that rots the collar of a pepper vine and kills it within weeks in the monsoon — prevented by drainage and a prophylactic fungicide, not cured.

Overview
Foot rot, also called quick wilt, is the single most destructive disease of black pepper. It is caused by Phytophthora capsici (and P. tropicalis), a soil-borne fungus-like organism that survives in the soil and is splashed onto the vine and spread by run-off water during the monsoon. It rots the collar and roots and produces dark, water-soaked lesions with a frayed (fimbriate) margin on the leaves and spikes higher up, along with heavy spike shedding.
The disease can wilt and kill a fully grown, bearing vine within one to three weeks, and in a wet year it can clear scattered vines or whole gardens. Once the collar is girdled there is no cure — the vine is removed. Management is entirely preventive: free drainage and planting on the high side of a slope or a mound, a Trichoderma-enriched pit and periodic soil application of Trichoderma, a prophylactic fungicide drench and spray at the first monsoon showers and again mid-monsoon, prompt removal of dead vines with their roots, and clean planting material.
How to identify it
- Sudden wilting and yellowing of a whole vine, often within one to three weeks.
- A black, water-soaked rot girdling the collar and main stem at or just below ground level.
- Dark leaf and spike lesions with a frayed (fimbriate) margin higher up the vine, and heavy shedding of spikes.
- Worst where water collects around the vine base in the monsoon.
What causes it and when
- Phytophthora capsici (and P. tropicalis), a soil-borne organism that survives in the soil and infected debris.
- Splashed onto the vine and spread by run-off water during the south-west monsoon.
- Favoured by waterlogging at the collar, poor drainage, and prolonged heavy monsoon rain; a vine planted in a hollow or on flat compacted ground is the one that dies first.
Cultural & organic prevention
- Plant on the high side of a slope or on a mound, never in a hollow, and open drainage channels along the contour so water never stands around the collar.
- Fill the planting pit with a Trichoderma-enriched mix and apply Trichoderma to the root zone periodically.
- Take rooted cuttings only from disease-free mother vines, and dip cuttings and their potting mix against Phytophthora before planting.
- Remove dead vines with their roots and destroy them; do not move soil or planting material from an affected garden to a clean one.
Chemical control
- Drench the vine base and spray the foliage with a recommended systemic (metalaxyl-based) or copper fungicide at the first monsoon showers, before symptoms.
- Repeat the drench and spray in the middle of the monsoon.
- Reacting after vines start wilting is reacting too late — the collar is already girdled and the vine is lost.

Can foot rot be cured once a vine shows symptoms?
No. Once the collar is girdled by the rot the vine cannot be saved and should be removed with its roots and destroyed. All the effective work against foot rot is preventive — drainage, mound planting, Trichoderma, clean planting material, and a prophylactic fungicide applied before the monsoon spreads the disease.
