Overview

Rock phosphate is naturally-occurring phosphate rock, ground to a powder. Its total phosphorus (roughly 18–30% P₂O₅) is high, but most of it is not immediately available — it dissolves slowly, and only in acidic conditions. That makes it a genuine, low-cost phosphorus source on acidic soils (much of eastern and southern India, tea and plantation soils) and a poor one on neutral-to-alkaline soils, where it barely dissolves.

Because it releases over years rather than weeks, it is a soil-building, long-term phosphorus investment rather than a starter fertiliser — best applied well ahead of the crop and, ideally, alongside phosphate-solubilising bacteria (PSB) or plenty of organic matter, which speed up its release. It is a mainstay of organic farming, where soluble fertilisers are not allowed.

  • Expecting a quick response — it is a slow, long-term source, not a starter fertiliser.
  • Using it alone on a phosphorus-hungry crop that needs available phosphorus at sowing, where SSP/DAP is the right tool.
