About this variety
Suvasini, also given as DWD-2 and seen transliterated as Suwasini or Suhasini in different sources, is the companion clonal selection to DWD-1, released by the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad from curry leaf (Murraya koenigii) germplasm collected across the Western Ghats. Independent horticultural-research summaries describe it as having good aroma and leaf quality with an oil content broadly comparable to DWD-1 in comparative trials, but its defining advantage is cold tolerance: unlike DWD-1, which shows poor growth and lower leaf yield through the winter, Suvasini keeps yielding through cooler weather, which is reported to give it a higher overall yield across the year and makes it the more widely recommended of UAS-Dharwad's two releases for general commercial planting. As a clonal selection rather than a seed-grown type, it must be propagated true-to-type through root suckers or stem cuttings from a confirmed mother plant, since a seedling raised from its berries would not reliably reproduce the same aroma and growth habit. It is grown mainly in Karnataka and, along with DWD-1, represents one of the very few formally released, named curry leaf cultivars available to Indian farmers.
