About this variety

Him Shakti is India's first indigenous quinoa release, developed by the ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources' regional station at Shimla under the All India Coordinated Research Network on Potential Crops (AICRN-PC). It is the only quinoa variety formally released in India to date; virtually all other commercial quinoa grown in the country comes from imported or privately traded seed lines sold by grain colour rather than a named bred variety. In multi-genotype field evaluations in Rajasthan alongside germplasm accessions sourced from ICAR's National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, Him Shakti was noted for early and stable flowering — a useful trait for timing the crop's vulnerable flowering stage away from disease-favouring humid spells and heat stress.
