About this variety

The IFGTB TG-series (TG-1 through TG-5) are five tissue-culture teak clones developed and evaluated by ICFRE-IFGTB (Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding), Coimbatore, selected for faster growth, better girth development, and a straighter, more cylindrical bole than ordinary seedling-origin planting stock. Tamil Nadu's Green Tamil Nadu Mission has begun distributing these clones to farmers as part of a state programme covering 55,000 seedlings across demonstration plots in 20 districts, using a deliberate polyclonal approach (multiple clones together) to spread the risk of any single clone being hit by pests, disease or climate stress. Individual clones from this series, including TG-5, are also available directly through IFGTB-linked and private tissue-culture nurseries.

Sowing & cultivation

  • Spacing2 × 2 m to 3 × 3 m at initial planting, thinned progressively over the rotation

Yield & maturity

Maturity period

Faster early growth than seedling stock; full rotation still 20+ years

Expected yield

High; more uniform bole shape improves sawn-timber recovery

Actual yield depends on sowing time, soil, irrigation, weather, seed quality and crop management.

Pest & disease considerations

Advantages & considerations

Why farmers may choose it

  • Faster growth and better girth development than ordinary seedling-origin stock
  • Straighter, more cylindrical bole shape improves sawn-timber recovery at felling
  • Backed by a state farm-forestry programme (Tamil Nadu's Green Tamil Nadu Mission) with demonstration plots to monitor real-world performance

Things to consider

  • Costs more per plant than an ordinary seedling stump, since it requires tissue-culture propagation
  • Availability may still be building out as the associated nursery infrastructure scales up in some states
