About this variety

HD 3226, marketed as Pusa Yashasvi, was bred at the Division of Genetics, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, from a GRACKLE/HD2894 cross developed by the pedigree method. It was officially notified for commercial cultivation via S.O. 1498(E), dated 1 April 2019, for timely-sown irrigated conditions of the North Western Plain Zone (NWPZ). IARI's own release page defines that zone in specific detail — Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan (excluding Kota and Udaipur divisions), western Uttar Pradesh (excluding Jhansi division), Jammu and Kathua district of J&K, Una district and the Paonta Valley of Himachal Pradesh, and the Tarai region of Uttarakhand — a considerably wider recommendation than this page's existing three-state (Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh) listing. On yield, the official figures corroborate this page closely: 57.5 q/ha average and 79.6 q/ha genetic potential across multi-location coordinated trials, matching the existing "57–80 q/ha" field almost exactly. Its biofortification credentials are strong — 12.8% protein and 36.8 ppm zinc, both notably higher than the older HD 3086 and HD 2967 checks — plus a perfect Glu-1 quality score of 10 and a 6.7 bread-quality score, useful for chapatti and bread-making.
