Overview
Telangana's Fisheries Department runs a State-sponsored scheme that supplies fish seed and prawn juveniles free of cost. The department's own scheme page describes it as a 100% grant: the government pays the whole cost, and fishermen do not.
The seed is not handed out as a personal kit. It is put into the state's water bodies — reservoirs and tanks — and the fishermen cooperative societies are the main recipient organisations. The quantity for each water body is worked out from its water-spread area.
To show the scale, the department's page gives 2018-19: about 10,776 reservoirs and tanks were stocked with fish seed and 24 with prawn juveniles, using roughly 49.15 crore fish seed and 3.19 crore prawn juveniles at a cost of about ₹49.22 crore. These are old-year figures, shown only for scale.
On 2 August 2026 the state sanctioned money for the 2026-27 drive, reported at more than ₹100 crore (Hans India). The tender for supplying the seed was still to be completed at that time, so stocking in tanks follows the tender. Media reports differ on the exact sanctioned amount, so the figure is not quoted here.
What you get
The benefit as the state notifies it — nothing here is an estimate.
- Free fish seed and prawn juveniles — no seed cost for the society.
- Quantity is based on the water-spread area of each tank or reservoir.
- More stocking means a better catch and income for fishermen members.
Who is eligible
State schemes usually state their criteria as prose rather than a checklist. This is that prose, unpacked — the department’s verification is what decides.
You qualify if
- Fishermen cooperative societies working in state water bodies (reservoirs and tanks) in Telangana
- Individual fishermen benefit as members of those societies
Documents you need
Have these ready before you start — most rejections are a missing paper, not a missing right.
- Membership proof of the fishermen cooperative society
- Aadhaar card
- Society registration details (for the society office-bearers)
How to apply
Fewer steps than a central scheme, and usually one office rather than a portal.
- 1
Be a member of an active fishermen society
The scheme works through fishermen cooperative societies. If you are not yet a member, ask the district Fisheries Department office how to join the society for your tank.
- 2
Know your tank's allotment
Ask the society office-bearers or the District Fisheries Officer how much seed is planned for your water body this year.
- 3
Be present at stocking
When seed arrives after the tender, the society and fisheries staff release it into the water. Check the species and count with the officer.
- 4
Report short supply or poor seed
If the seed is less than planned or dies in large numbers, write to the District Fisheries Officer the same day.
If something goes wrong
Missing from the list, or payment stuck — here is the channel the department itself publishes for it.
- First, the District Fisheries Officer of your district.
- For escalation, use Prajavani: prajavani.cgg.gov.in, or petition in person at Mahatma Jyothiba Phule Praja Bhavan, Hyderabad, on Tuesday or Friday.
Frequently asked questions
Is the fish seed really free?
Yes. The Fisheries Department describes it as a 100% grant scheme, so the state bears the full cost of the seed and prawn juveniles.
Can I, as an individual farmer, get fish seed for my own pond?
This scheme is for state water bodies and fishermen cooperative societies. For a private pond, ask the district fisheries office about the central PMMSY scheme.
How much seed does each tank get?
It depends on the water-spread area of the tank or reservoir. The department does not publish one fixed number per tank.
How much has the state sanctioned for 2026-27?
More than ₹100 crore was reported on 2 August 2026, but outlets differ on the exact figure, so check the Fisheries Department for the final amount.
When will the seed reach my tank?
In 2026 the tender was still being completed in August, so timing depends on the supply contract and the monsoon water level. Ask your District Fisheries Officer.
Do prawns get the same support?
Yes. The scheme covers prawn juveniles as well as fish seed, though in 2018-19 only 24 water bodies received prawn juveniles against about 10,776 for fish seed.
