Post-Harvest Storage Tips That Actually Prevent Losses
Grain that goes into storage too damp, uncleaned or on bare ground is grain that is already partway to spoiled. Most storage loss is decided in the first week after harvest, not months later.
A widely cited estimate puts India's post-harvest grain losses in the range of several percent to well over 10% depending on the crop and storage method — and almost all of that loss is decided by choices made in the first week after harvest, before the grain ever reaches long-term storage.
Dry before you store, not after a problem shows up
Grain stored above roughly 12–14% moisture is grain where mould and insect activity accelerate sharply — this single factor is behind more storage loss than almost any other. Sun-drying on a clean surface (a tarp, not bare ground) or mechanical drying where available should bring grain to safe moisture before it goes into any storage structure, not as a fix once spoilage is already visible.
Clean and grade before storage, not after
Broken grains, chaff and foreign matter left mixed in with clean grain do two things: they trap moisture pockets that encourage mould, and they give storage pests something to start on. A cleaning and grading pass before storage is a small step that meaningfully slows both problems.
Choosing a storage structure
- Traditional bins (kothi) — low cost, widely used, but often not airtight and can be harder to keep pest-free without active management.
- Metal bins — better moisture and pest resistance than traditional structures, a common mid-tier upgrade.
- Hermetic (airtight) bags — starve storage insects of oxygen without a chemical fumigant, a genuinely effective low-cost option for small and medium quantities.
- Accredited warehouses (WDRA-registered) — the option that also unlocks pledge financing against a warehouse receipt, turning stored grain into a financial asset rather than just stored produce.
Keep it off the floor, and keep air moving
Stacking bags directly on bare ground wicks moisture up from below regardless of how dry the grain was when it went in — pallets or a raised platform break that contact. Some airflow around stored bags, rather than a tightly packed, sealed room with no ventilation at all (hermetic bags excepted, which are intentionally sealed), reduces the humid microclimate that pests and mould both prefer.
Pest management: prevention over chemical rescue
Regular inspection catches an infestation while it is still small and manageable. Traditional botanical protectants (neem leaves mixed through stored grain, for instance) offer a genuine low-cost first line of defence. Chemical fumigation is effective but is a specialist task requiring correct dosage and safety handling — not a routine DIY step, and one that carries real risk if done incorrectly.
