Capsule rot (Azhukal)

A monsoon-season Phytophthora disease that rots cardamom capsules from water-soaked spots into a soft, foul-smelling mass within days — and can travel down into the rhizome to collapse the whole clump.

Overview

Capsule rot, known locally as Azhukal, is considered the single most fatal disease of small cardamom in the field. It is caused mainly by Phytophthora meadii, with P. nicotianae also implicated, both soil- and water-borne fungus-like pathogens that thrive in the warm, humid, waterlogged conditions of the south-west monsoon. Infection begins as small, water-soaked lesions on the still-developing green capsules on a panicle; the lesions enlarge fast, turn dark brown to black, and the capsule rots, softens and gives off a foul smell within a matter of days under favourable weather.

Left unmanaged, the rot spreads from capsule to capsule along a panicle and from panicle to panicle within a clump, and in a severe, prolonged wet spell the pathogen can move down the pseudostem into the rhizome, killing the whole plant rather than just that season's crop. Because both the pathogen and the disease favour standing water and dense, shaded, poorly ventilated plantings, management rests on drainage, spacing and shade regulation as much as on fungicide, backed by a protectant spray programme timed to the monsoon rather than a reaction once capsules are already rotting.

How to identify it

  • Small, water-soaked lesions appear first on green, still-developing capsules on a panicle.
  • Lesions enlarge rapidly, turning dark brown to black within days in warm, wet weather.
  • Infected capsules soften, rot completely and give off a distinct foul smell.
  • In severe cases the rot moves along the panicle, between panicles in the clump, and can descend into the pseudostem and rhizome, killing the plant.

What causes it and when

  • Mainly the fungus-like pathogen Phytophthora meadii, with P. nicotianae also reported as a cause.
  • Favoured strongly by the south-west monsoon's combination of warmth, high humidity and prolonged leaf/capsule wetness.
  • Spreads by splashing rain and moving water carrying spores from infected debris and soil onto healthy capsules and panicles.
  • Worse in low-lying, poorly drained plantings and under dense, unregulated shade that keeps the canopy wet and still for longer.

Cultural & organic control

  • Improve field drainage before the monsoon — this single step cuts the standing moisture the pathogen depends on more than any spray applied afterward.
  • Regulate shade to let air movement and some light through the canopy rather than leaving it dense and permanently wet.
  • Remove and destroy fallen, rotted capsules and panicle debris promptly so they do not carry the pathogen over to the next flush.
  • Avoid excess nitrogen and dense, over-crowded planting, both of which promote the soft, humid growth the disease favours.

Chemical control

  • A scheduled protectant fungicide programme (commonly a copper-based spray or a systemic like metalaxyl-mancozeb) timed to just before and through the wet monsoon gives far better control than spraying after rot appears.
  • Repeat sprays on the interval recommended for your district's rainfall pattern, since prolonged wet spells wash off and outrun a single application.
  • Where the rot is already spreading, remove and destroy affected capsules and panicles before spraying the rest of the clump.

Prevent it coming back

  • Site and drain new plantings so water never stands around the clump through the monsoon.
  • Regulate shade every year rather than letting the canopy close up and stay permanently humid.
  • Start the protectant fungicide programme ahead of the monsoon on a fixed schedule, not as a reaction to visible rot.
  • Clear fallen capsule and panicle debris each season so it cannot re-seed the disease into the next flush.

My cardamom capsules have dark, wet-looking spots that are spreading fast in the rains. What is it?

That fast-spreading, water-soaked, dark rot on the capsules during the monsoon is almost certainly capsule rot (Azhukal), caused by Phytophthora meadii or P. nicotianae — considered the most fatal field disease of small cardamom. Why does capsule rot sometimes kill the whole clump, not just that season's crop?

In a severe, prolonged wet spell the same Phytophthora pathogen that rots the capsules can travel down the panicle and pseudostem into the underground rhizome. Once it reaches the rhizome, it can kill the entire clump rather than just spoiling the capsules on the affected panicles — which is why drainage and shade management, not just spraying the visible rot, matter so much for this disease.

Is capsule rot the same as the rhizome rot that some cardamom varieties are bred to resist?

No — they are related but distinct problems. Capsule rot (Azhukal) is a Phytophthora disease of the developing capsules and panicles, usually starting above ground during the monsoon. Rhizome rot is a separate, primarily Pythium-driven disease of the underground rhizome itself (the reason releases like IISR Avinash were specifically bred for rhizome-rot resistance). A badly managed capsule rot infection can eventually reach the rhizome too, but the two are different diseases with different primary pathogens.
