Overview
Katte (also written Kokke Kandu) is the most economically damaging viral disease of small cardamom, caused by Cardamom mosaic virus. The first sign appears on the youngest leaf of an infected tiller: spindle-shaped, pale chlorotic flecks that lengthen into discontinuous stripes of pale and dark green running parallel to the leaf veins. As the disease advances, every new leaf and tiller shows the characteristic mosaic mottling, the clump becomes progressively stunted and bushy with thin, undersized tillers, and the panicles that do form set fewer, smaller and often malformed capsules.
The virus is spread mainly by the banana aphid (Pentalonia nigronervosa) feeding on infected plants and moving to healthy ones, but its most important pathway in practice is human — infected rhizomes and suckers dug from a diseased clump and planted in a new field or a neighbouring farm carry the virus with them. Because there is no cure once a plant is infected, and yield loss can run from a partial reduction in a young infection to a near-total loss in an old, badly affected clump, management is entirely about prevention: planting only certified virus-indexed suckers, roguing out infected clumps the moment they are spotted, and controlling the aphid vector around the nursery and field.
How to identify it

Cultural & organic control

- Grow a tolerant/resistant release such as IISR Vijetha in areas with a history of Katte pressure.
- Isolate a new planting from older, disease-affected blocks where practical, and disinfect tools used near suspect clumps.
Chemical (vector) control
- The virus itself cannot be sprayed away — chemical effort goes into the banana aphid vector, not the plant.
- A recommended systemic insecticide against banana aphid colonies, applied around the nursery and field margins, slows new spread.
- Vector control alone will not stop an epidemic already established through infected suckers — roguing and clean planting material matter more.

Prevent it coming back
- Base every new planting on certified, virus-indexed suckers — this single decision does more than any later spray.
- Rogue and destroy infected clumps early and completely, including the rhizome, rather than leaving a diseased plant in the ground.
- Manage the banana aphid vector around nurseries and young plantings.
- Avoid taking or accepting planting material from farms with a known Katte history.
