Overview

Walnut blight is a bacterial disease (Xanthomonas arboricola pv. juglandis) and the single most important disease of walnut worldwide, including in India's Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand growing belts. It produces small, dark, water-soaked spots on leaflets that enlarge and turn black, often with a yellow halo; male catkins can blacken and die before shedding pollen; young shoots show dark, sunken lesions; and developing nuts show dark, sunken spots that can rot the kernel inside or cause the nut to drop prematurely.

The bacterium overwinters in dormant buds and old cankers on the tree itself, then spreads in spring by wind-driven rain and splash, entering leaves, catkins, shoots and nuts through natural openings and wounds. It is strongly favoured by wet, humid weather right at bud-break and through flowering, when catkins and young leaves stay damp for extended periods — the same weather window that matters for many other spring-flowering fruit and nut trees. Because there is no cure once tissue is infected, management is entirely about protecting healthy tissue ahead of infection with a correctly timed copper-spray programme, not treating symptoms after they appear.

Cultural & organic control

  • Avoid overhead irrigation and any unnecessary wetting of the canopy during flowering, since prolonged wetness on catkins and leaves is what lets the bacterium establish.
  • Prune to open up the canopy so it dries faster after rain, and remove and destroy old cankered wood in the dormant season.
  • Space and orient plantings for good airflow where a new orchard is being laid out.
  • Some newer varieties are bred for resistance to other walnut diseases such as anthracnose — check a variety's documented resistance to walnut blight specifically before assuming it is also resistant here, since the two are different diseases caused by different organisms.

Chemical control

  • A protective copper-based spray programme timed from bud-break through flowering and into early nut development is the standard control — sprays protect healthy tissue, they cannot cure tissue already infected.
  • Because the bacterium can develop resistance to copper with long-term, repeated use, rotating or combining copper with another cleared bactericide where recommended helps sustain control over the years.
  • Time sprays to weather forecasts where possible — a spray just ahead of a wet spell at bud-break or bloom protects far more effectively than one applied on a fixed calendar date regardless of weather.
  • Confirm the current copper-spray schedule and any resistance-management advice for your area with SKUAST-Kashmir, ICAR-CITH or your local KVK.

Prevent it coming back

  • Start every spring's protection at bud-break, not after the first spots appear — there is no cure for infected tissue.
  • Keep the canopy open and dry through pruning, and remove old cankered wood each dormant season to reduce the bacterium's overwintering sites.
  • Avoid wetting catkins and young leaves with overhead irrigation during flowering.
  • Treat a documented resistance to a different disease (such as anthracnose) as unrelated to walnut blight resistance unless a variety's resistance to this specific disease is separately confirmed.
