Overview

Urea is a straight nitrogen fertiliser: 46% N and nothing else, the highest nitrogen content of any solid fertiliser, which is why it is the cheapest way to buy nitrogen. It drives leafy, vegetative growth — tillering in cereals, branching in cotton and pulses — and a shortage shows as a pale, yellow crop.

Its weakness is loss. Broadcast onto a dry surface, urea converts to ammonia gas and drifts away — 30–40% gone in a few days. Almost everything about applying urea well is about beating that loss: apply to moist soil, incorporate or irrigate immediately, and never dump the whole dose at once.

What it is and when to reach for it

  • A straight nitrogen source — use it whenever a crop needs a nitrogen boost, especially during rapid vegetative growth.
  • It carries no phosphorus or potassium, so it is a partner to DAP/SSP and MOP, not a replacement for them.
  • Because nitrogen is mobile and easily lost, urea is best applied in split doses timed to the crop’s peak-demand stages rather than all at sowing.

How to apply it well

  • Top-dress onto moist soil and irrigate immediately, or incorporate it — never leave it on a dry surface in the sun.
  • Split the dose: a common pattern is one-third at sowing and the rest across one or two later stages (tillering, jointing).
  • For a fast rescue of visible yellowing, spray 2% urea — 2 kg urea in 100 litres of water per acre — and repeat after 10–15 days if needed.
  • Use a leaf-colour chart (LCC) in rice and wheat to time top dressing to the crop’s actual need.

Neem-coated urea

  • All subsidised urea in India is now neem-coated by law — the neem oil coating slows nitrogen release by 10–15 days, so more of it reaches the crop.
  • The coating also makes urea useless for industrial diversion, which is part of why the policy exists.
  • It does not change how you apply it — the same split-and-incorporate rules apply.

Common mistakes

  • Broadcasting on a dry field and walking away — the single biggest cause of wasted nitrogen.
  • Applying the whole season’s nitrogen at sowing, so the crop cannot use it before it leaches or volatilises.
  • Spreading urea on standing water in paddy without incorporation, or just before heavy rain.
  • Chasing a dark-green crop with extra urea — over-lush growth invites lodging and pests and delays maturity.

Common questions

How much urea per acre for wheat?

Roughly two 45 kg bags (about 85–90 kg) per acre, but that is after DAP has already supplied some nitrogen — so the real urea figure is often a little lower. Split it into basal, crown-root initiation and tillering doses rather than applying it all at once, and use the Fertilizer Calculator for your exact area and soil test.

Why is my urea being wasted?
