Breeds

Breed decides most of what follows — yield, feed need, heat tolerance and disease risk. Every figure is a typical range under normal management, not a guarantee; the same breed varies a great deal between a well-fed animal and one that is not.

Milk production, daily routine & equipment

The things that actually decide how much milk reaches the can, and how much of that is profit.

  • Milk production basics

    A lactation runs roughly 300 days, peaking 6–8 weeks after calving and tapering from there. A 60-day dry period before the next calving is not wasted time — it is when the udder tissue regenerates for the next lactation, and cutting it short shows up as a lower peak next time.

  • Daily routine

    Two milkings roughly 12 hours apart, at a fixed time — cows let down milk best on a routine, and an irregular schedule measurably drops yield over weeks, not just on the day it happens. Feed a share of the concentrate at each milking so the animal has a reason to stand still.

  • Milking equipment

    Hand milking is standard below about 5–6 animals. Past that, a portable single-bucket milking machine (₹35,000–60,000) pays back on labour saved. A teat-dip cup and a strip cup for screening the first squirt of each quarter are the two cheap essentials every unit should own regardless of scale — they catch mastitis before it becomes a treatment bill.

  • Feed management

    Feed is 65–70% of the cost of producing milk, which makes it the highest-leverage spend on the farm. Green fodder at 25–30 kg/day per adult animal is usually cheaper than buying in concentrate to make up the same energy — growing your own fodder is often worth more than upgrading the breed.

Feed

A dairy ration is built from four things — skipping any one shows up first as a drop in yield, not obviously as a feed problem.

Vaccination calendar

Birth through annual boosters — always confirm the current schedule with a local veterinarian, since state programmes vary.

  1. Birth

    Colostrum within 2 hours of birth; navel disinfected with tincture iodine.

  2. First vaccination (4 months)

    First FMD (Foot-and-Mouth Disease) dose; deworm about a week beforehand.

  3. Booster (6 months, then every 6 months)

    FMD is repeated every 6 months for life. HS (Haemorrhagic Septicaemia) and BQ (Black Quarter) are given once, annually, ahead of the monsoon.

  4. Annual

    FMD (twice a year), HS and BQ (once, pre-monsoon), and Brucellosis (heifer calves, once only, at 4–8 months age).

Disease management

None of these have a cure once symptoms show — every one of them is cheaper to vaccinate against, or milk hygienically around, than to treat.

  • Foot & Mouth Disease (FMD)

    • Blisters on mouth and hooves
    • Fever and drooling
    • Sharp drop in milk yield

    No cure — supportive care while the animal recovers over 2–3 weeks. Twice-yearly vaccination is the only real control.

  • Mastitis

    • Swollen, hot, painful udder
    • Clotted or watery milk
    • Drop in milk yield

    Intramammary antibiotic tubes under veterinary guidance, plus frequent complete milking. Teat dipping and hygienic milking prevent most cases before they start.

  • Milk fever (hypocalcaemia)

    • Staggering or collapse near calving
    • Cold ears and muscle tremors
    • Loss of appetite

    An emergency — intravenous calcium borogluconate under veterinary care, usually within hours of a call. Feeding a low-calcium dry-period ration reduces the risk.

Housing & milking equipment

A covered shed and clean flooring do more for milk quality than most feed changes.

  • Milk price and the cost of bought-in feed are the two biggest swing factors — a unit with its own fodder land is far less exposed to either.

Which dairy breed produces the most milk?

HF crossbred typically yields the most at 12–18 litres/day, followed by Jersey at 10–16 litres/day — both need careful feeding and housing to hit those numbers. Sahiwal and Gir yield less (8–10 and 6–10 litres/day) but are far hardier and cheaper to keep, which often makes them the better economic choice, not just the lower-yielding one.

How much land is required for dairy farming?

For the animals themselves, very little — a covered shed and small paddock is enough for 2–5 animals. The real land requirement is for fodder: roughly 0.5–1 acre of assured green fodder per adult animal keeps feed cost down; without it, feed must be bought in, which erodes most of the margin.

Is a milking machine worth buying for a small unit?

Below about 5–6 animals, hand milking is usually cheaper and just as fast. Past that headcount, a single-bucket portable machine (₹35,000–60,000) starts to save enough labour time to pay for itself, and it also milks each quarter out more consistently than a tired hand, which helps with mastitis.

How is mastitis prevented, not just treated?

Teat dipping after every milking and a strip cup to screen the first squirt from each quarter for clots catch most cases before they need an antibiotic tube. A clean, dry standing area matters just as much — most mastitis-causing bacteria live in wet bedding, not in the animal.

What vaccinations are mandatory for a dairy animal?

FMD (twice a year) and, in most states, HS and BQ (once annually, ahead of the monsoon) are treated as mandatory by state animal husbandry departments because of how fast and expensive an outbreak is. Brucellosis vaccination for heifer calves at 4–8 months is also standard practice.
