Overview
Avian influenza is caused by influenza A viruses. The highly pathogenic strains that periodically reach Indian poultry (commonly H5N1 and related subtypes) spread explosively and kill most of an infected unvaccinated flock within a few days. Wild migratory waterfowl are the natural reservoir and the usual route into backyard and commercial flocks, especially in the cooler months when migratory birds are present.
The picture is often simply sudden, heavy death with barely any warning signs — birds that looked fine the previous evening are found dead. Birds that survive a little longer show swelling and dark, purplish discolouration of the comb, wattles and legs, laboured breathing, greenish diarrhoea, nervous signs (tremors, twisted neck), and a sharp, sudden drop in egg production with thin-shelled or shell-less eggs.
Bird flu is a zoonosis: some strains infect people who have close, unprotected contact with sick or dead birds or heavily contaminated litter, occasionally causing severe illness. Because of this and the speed of spread between farms, the standard response everywhere is not treatment — there is none — but immediate reporting, quarantine, and culling and safe disposal under veterinary and animal-husbandry department supervision.

Signs to look for
- Sudden, heavy deaths with little or no warning — often the first and only sign in a fast-moving outbreak.
- Swelling and dark, purplish-blue discolouration of the comb, wattles and legs.
- Laboured breathing, coughing, sneezing, and a swollen face around the eyes.
- Nervous signs: tremors, incoordination, a twisted or drooping neck.
- Greenish, watery diarrhoea and marked dullness, huddling and ruffled feathers.
- A sudden, sharp fall in egg production, with soft-shelled or shell-less eggs.
How it spreads
- Direct and indirect contact with wild migratory waterfowl (ducks, geese) or their droppings, especially near ponds, wetlands and open water in the cooler months.
- Movement of infected birds, and contaminated crates, vehicles, feed, water and litter between farms and live-bird markets.
- On the hands, footwear and clothing of people moving between sheds.
- Rodents, wild birds and insects mechanically carrying contaminated material into a shed.
What to do immediately
- Report suspected bird flu to the veterinary or animal-husbandry department the same day — do not wait to see if more birds die. It is notifiable everywhere in India.
- Do not treat the flock, sell birds or eggs, or move anything off the farm while a report is pending.
- Isolate the affected shed immediately: stop all movement of birds, eggs, feed, equipment and people in or out.
- Wear gloves, a mask and eye protection if you must handle sick or dead birds before help arrives; wash thoroughly afterwards.
- Follow the department’s instructions exactly — culling, safe disposal, disinfection and a defined restocking wait are the standard, legally required response, not a choice.
- Anyone who had close contact with sick or dead birds and later develops fever, cough or breathing difficulty should tell a doctor about the exposure at once.
Reducing the risk
- Keep backyard poultry away from ponds, wetlands and other water bodies used by wild migratory birds, especially in winter.
- Screen or net open sheds to keep wild birds out, and control rodents.
- Keep a footbath at the shed entrance, limit visitors, and never share crates or equipment with other flocks unwashed.
- Buy birds only from known, healthy sources and quarantine new arrivals before mixing them in.
- Report any unusually large or sudden die-off promptly, even before you are sure of the cause — early reporting is what limits how far an outbreak spreads.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to eat chicken or eggs during a bird flu outbreak in my area?
Properly cooked poultry meat and eggs are safe to eat — the virus does not survive normal cooking temperatures. The real risk is in handling live or dead sick birds and contaminated material, not in eating well-cooked food. Do not buy or sell birds or eggs from a farm under a reporting order or cull.
Can bird flu spread to my other animals, like cattle or goats?
The classic poultry-adapted strains mainly affect birds, though some influenza A strains have occasionally been detected in other species elsewhere in the world. In practice, the immediate priority in an outbreak is isolating and reporting the affected poultry, and keeping other livestock and people away from the shed and its litter until the department clears the site.
Why does the response involve culling healthy-looking birds too?
Birds can be shedding virus for a day or more before they look sick, so a bird in the same shed as confirmed cases may already be infected even without visible signs. Culling and safe disposal of the whole affected unit, not just the visibly sick birds, is what actually stops the virus from spreading further — treating case by case does not work for a disease this fast.
How is bird flu different from Newcastle disease?
Both cause sudden, heavy poultry mortality and can look alike in the shed. Bird flu more often shows dark swelling and discolouration of the comb, wattles and legs, and it is zoonotic (can infect people), which Newcastle disease is not. Only laboratory testing tells them apart for certain, which is exactly why any sudden large die-off must be reported rather than guessed at.
