Infectious bursal disease (Gumboro / IBD)

The disease that does its real damage twice — once as sudden illness in young chicks, and again afterwards, by wrecking the immune organ that every later vaccine depends on.

Overview

IBD is caused by a Birnavirus that specifically attacks the bursa of Fabricius, the organ in young chickens where the immune system’s antibody-producing cells develop. It mainly strikes chicks between about 3 and 6 weeks of age, spread through droppings-contaminated litter, feed, water, equipment and people — the virus is very hardy and can survive in a shed for months, which is why sheds with a past outbreak see repeat trouble.

The acute form appears suddenly: whitish, watery diarrhoea, birds huddling with ruffled feathers and trembling, loss of appetite, and a spike in deaths over 3–5 days that then tapers off — survivors often look to recover, but the real cost is what comes next.

Because IBD damages the bursa, survivors are left with a weakened or unreliable immune response for the rest of their lives: vaccines given afterwards (including Newcastle disease boosters) work less well, and the flock becomes more prone to secondary infections it would normally shrug off. This is why IBD control focuses on protecting chicks before they are ever exposed — maternal antibody from a properly vaccinated breeder flock, followed by the chick’s own vaccine at the right age.

Signs to look for

  • Sudden onset in a flock 3–6 weeks old — birds huddling together, ruffled and trembling.
  • Whitish, watery diarrhoea, often staining the vent feathers.
  • Loss of appetite, dullness and a hunched, unwell posture.
  • A quick rise in deaths over 3–5 days, then a fall as survivors appear to recover.
  • After apparent recovery: more frequent or severe secondary infections, and a poorer-than-expected response to later vaccines.

How it spreads

  • Droppings-contaminated litter, feed, water and equipment — the virus is unusually hardy and can persist in a shed for months.
  • On the hands, footwear and clothing of people moving between sheds.
  • From a breeder flock’s eggs and chicks that carry maternal antibody but were themselves exposed to the field virus.
  • A shed with a past IBD outbreak stays a higher-risk site for future batches unless thoroughly cleaned and rested.

Vaccination

  • Vaccinate breeder flocks so day-old chicks hatch with protective maternal antibody, which covers the first couple of weeks of life.
  • Give the chick’s own IBD vaccine by eye-drop or drinking water once maternal antibody has started to wane — commonly a first dose around 14 days, with a booster about a week later; a vet or hatchery can advise the exact timing for local disease pressure.
  • Use only non-chlorinated water with a stabiliser (skim-milk powder) for drinking-water vaccination, and use the mixed vaccine within a couple of hours.
  • Where a shed has a history of IBD, a more protective ("intermediate-plus") vaccine strain may be advised by a vet — a milder routine strain can be overwhelmed by heavy field virus in the litter.

If an outbreak occurs

  • There is no antiviral treatment — supportive care is what gets a flock through the acute phase.
  • Give clean water with electrolytes and, where advised by a vet, a vitamin/mineral supplement to help affected chicks through the 3–5 day acute period.
  • Keep the shed extra clean and reduce stress (crowding, sudden feed changes) during and after an outbreak — a bursa-damaged flock is more vulnerable to everything else.
  • Watch survivors closely for secondary infections over the following weeks and treat those promptly.
  • Clean out litter thoroughly, disinfect the shed with a disinfectant effective against this hardy virus, and rest the shed longer than usual before the next batch.

Frequently asked questions

My chicks survived Gumboro. Are they fine now?

They survive the acute illness, but the bursa damage often leaves them with weaker, less reliable protection from vaccines given afterwards and more vulnerable to infections they would otherwise fight off easily. Watch this batch more closely than usual and keep its later vaccination schedule on time — do not assume "recovered" means "back to normal".

Why does IBD keep coming back in the same shed every batch?

The virus is unusually hardy and can survive in dropped litter and on surfaces for months, even after a shed looks clean. If cleaning and disinfection between batches were not thorough, or the shed was not rested long enough, the next flock walks straight into a contaminated environment. A history of repeat trouble is a strong reason to review your cleanout routine and consider a stronger vaccine strain with a vet.

Is Gumboro disease the same as coccidiosis?

No, though both commonly hit young birds and both can cause diarrhoea. Coccidiosis is a gut parasite tied closely to damp litter and is treatable with anticoccidial medication. IBD is a virus that specifically damages the immune-building bursa, has no treatment, and its real cost is the weakened immunity it leaves behind — the two need different prevention approaches.

Can IBD affect a laying flock’s egg production?

IBD mainly strikes young growing chicks before laying age, so it does not directly hit egg production the way Newcastle disease can. Its damage is indirect and later: a flock that had IBD as chicks can carry weaker immunity into lay, making it more prone to other infections that then do affect production.
