Coccidiosis

The everyday disease that quietly eats into a broiler batch’s weight gain and a backyard flock’s growth — almost always traceable to wet, dirty litter rather than bad luck.

Overview

Coccidiosis is caused by several species of Eimeria, single-celled parasites that live and multiply in the lining of the gut. Birds pick up the parasite’s eggs (oocysts) from droppings-contaminated litter, feed and water, and once inside the gut the parasite damages the intestinal lining, which is what causes bleeding, poor absorption of feed and, in bad cases, death.

It hits chicks and growers hardest — the 3-to-8-week window is the highest-risk period — and is almost always a litter-management problem: warm, damp, caked litter lets the oocysts survive and build up to infective numbers, while dry, regularly turned or changed litter breaks the cycle. Overcrowding and mixing age groups also raise the risk.

Mild coccidiosis just quietly reduces weight gain and feed efficiency without birds looking obviously sick, which is why many keepers underestimate its cost. A heavier outbreak shows bloody or watery droppings, ruffled feathers, huddling, pale combs and a real drop in growth or egg production, with deaths possible in young or heavily infected birds.

Signs to look for

  • Bloody or watery, mucousy droppings — often the clearest sign of an active outbreak.
  • Ruffled feathers, huddling together, and birds looking cold or listless.
  • Pale comb and wattles, and reduced feed and water intake.
  • Slower weight gain in growers, or a drop in egg production in layers, even without dramatic visible illness.
  • In heavy infections: weakness, birds sitting hunched, and deaths concentrated in the youngest or most crowded groups.

Why litter is the real cause

  • Eimeria oocysts are shed in droppings and need warm, moist conditions to become infective — dry litter breaks this cycle before it starts.
  • Wet spots around drinkers, leaking waterers, and caked, matted litter are where oocyst numbers build up fastest.
  • Overcrowding concentrates droppings and moisture in a small area, speeding up the buildup.
  • Mixing different age groups in one shed lets older, partly immune birds seed the litter with oocysts that hit younger, unprotected chicks hard.

Litter management (prevention)

  • Keep litter dry — fix leaking drinkers immediately, and use a litter depth and type (rice husk, sawdust) that absorbs moisture well.
  • Turn or top up litter regularly, and remove and replace caked, wet patches rather than leaving them.
  • Do not overcrowd the shed; keep stocking density within the recommended range for the bird’s age and shed size.
  • Clean out litter completely and disinfect the shed between batches; leave it empty for 2–3 weeks before restocking.
  • Where coccidiosis vaccine or coccidiostat-medicated starter feed is available, use it in the highest-risk 3–8 week window, especially in sheds with a history of the disease.

Treatment

  • Give an anticoccidial medication in feed or drinking water as soon as signs appear, under veterinary or feed-supplier guidance — early treatment limits gut damage and deaths.
  • Fix the underlying litter problem at the same time; medicating without drying the litter usually means the outbreak returns.
  • Give affected birds easy access to clean water and a palatable, easily digestible feed while they recover.
  • Keep weak or badly affected birds separate so they are not crowded out of feed and water by stronger pen-mates.
  • Expect a slower flock than planned for that batch — factor the lost growth into your feed and sale planning rather than pushing weak birds to market weight on schedule.

Frequently asked questions

My birds look fine but are not gaining weight as fast as expected. Could it be coccidiosis?

Yes — mild or sub-clinical coccidiosis is very common and often shows only as slower growth and poorer feed conversion, without obvious bloody droppings or sick-looking birds. If growth lags without another clear cause, check the litter for damp, caked patches and consider it a likely factor.

Is coccidiosis contagious to people or other kinds of livestock?

No. Poultry Eimeria species are host-specific to birds and do not infect people, cattle, goats or other livestock. The risk is entirely within the poultry shed, spread bird to bird through contaminated litter, feed and water.

I medicate every batch. Why does coccidiosis still happen?

Medication treats the parasite, but if the litter stays damp and caked the shed keeps producing new infective oocysts, so the problem returns once medication stops. Fixing leaking drinkers, keeping litter dry, and not overcrowding the shed matter as much as the medicine — treat the cause, not only the outbreak.

Can older birds get coccidiosis too, or is it only chicks?

Older birds can be infected, but repeated low-level exposure usually leaves them with partial immunity, so they show milder or no signs while still shedding oocysts into the litter. That is exactly the risk of mixing ages in one shed — apparently healthy older birds can seed enough parasites to cause a serious outbreak in younger, unprotected chicks.
