About this variety

PKM-2 is a second improved tamarind from the Horticultural Research Station, Periyakulam (TNAU), grown as a graft alongside or in place of PKM-1. It is valued for longer pods and a good pulp-to-shell ratio, which lifts the recovery of usable pulp per quintal of raw pod. Like PKM-1 it is precocious, coming into bearing in about four to five years, and is planted at 6–8 m in a standard grafted orchard.

Yield & maturity

Maturity period

Bears from year 4–5

Expected yield

High; long pods give a good pulp-to-pod ratio

Actual yield depends on sowing time, soil, irrigation, weather, seed quality and crop management.

Pest & disease considerations

Major diseases

  • Not separately documented

Advantages & considerations

Why farmers may choose it

  • Long pods with a good pulp-to-shell ratio — more usable pulp per quintal of raw pod
  • Precocious, bearing from about year 4–5 like PKM-1
  • Suits both culinary sale and pulp processing

Things to consider

  • Disease and pest resistance is not separately documented — manage bud webber and pod borer as for any tamarind
  • Less widely planted than PKM-1, so grafted plants may be harder to source in some areas
