Gujarat Isabgol-2 (GI-2)
Anand Agricultural University's second isabgol release, still widely grown, but documented as the weakest of four compared genotypes for downy mildew tolerance in a published field trial.

About this variety
Gujarat Isabgol-2 (GI-2) was released in 1983 by Anand Agricultural University (AAU), Gujarat. It has a medium-broad, pale-green leaf and yields somewhat more than the earlier GI-1, at roughly 900–1,000 kg/ha. GI-2 is widely used as a check/comparison variety in isabgol research because it is well established and consistently grown — but that same research has repeatedly found it carries weaker downy mildew tolerance than newer releases: in one published field trial comparing four genotypes, GI-2 showed the highest disease severity index of the group. Since downy mildew, especially the form that infects the flower directly, is the disease that decides most isabgol seasons, this is a real practical limitation for growers in a humid-prone tract, even though the variety remains common and easy to source.

Advantages & considerations
Why farmers may choose it
- Slightly higher yield than GI-1, at roughly 900–1,000 kg/ha.
- Widely available, well-established seed source across Gujarat and Rajasthan.
Things to consider
- Documented as having the weakest downy mildew tolerance among four compared genotypes in a published trial — a real risk in a humid, disease-prone season.
- Better suited to areas with a lower history of downy mildew pressure than to a field with a known disease record.
