Haryana Isabgol-5 (HI-5)

A 1989 release from CCS Haryana Agricultural University, notable as one of the few isabgol varieties with a documented husk-recovery percentage — a directly useful figure since the husk, not the seed, is the crop's real product.

About this variety

Haryana Isabgol-5 (HI-5) was released in 1989 by CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, as a selection from the earlier Gujarat Isabgol-2 (GI-2) line. It is notably longer in duration than most other named isabgol varieties, at 140–145 days, and yields 1,000–1,200 kg/ha of seed. What sets HI-5 apart on this page is that it is one of the few varieties with a documented husk-recovery figure — about 25–30% of seed weight comes out as husk (bhusi) after processing, which matters directly to a grower since the husk, not the seed itself, carries almost all of the crop's commercial value. Its longer duration means it needs to fit a slightly longer rabi window than the shorter-cycle Vallabh Isabgol-2 release.
