About this variety

Tomuri is a male kiwi vine grown not for fruit but as a pollen source, its flowering timed to overlap with late female varieties such as Hayward. Because kiwi is dioecious, the female (fruiting) vines cannot set a crop without pollen from a male flowering alongside them, so one compatible male like Tomuri is interplanted for every five to eight female vines, spread evenly through the block. Choosing a male whose flowering overlaps the female variety's is essential тАФ a male that flowers at the wrong time is as good as no male at all. It is grown, trained and tended like the female vines.

Advantages & considerations

Why farmers may choose it

  • The essential pollen source for Hayward and other late female varieties.
  • Flowering matched to the late females so pollination coincides with their bloom.

Things to consider

  • Produces no fruit itself тАФ it is planted purely to pollinate the female vines.
  • Its flowering must overlap the female variety's; match the pollinator to the female chosen.
