NBS-1 (Button Mushroom)

A browning-resistant hybrid white button mushroom developed and released by ICAR-Directorate of Mushroom Research (DMR), Solan — bred to hold its white colour longer after harvest, which is a genuine shelf-life and marketability advantage over the older S-11/U-3 strains.

About this variety

NBS-1 is a browning-resistant white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) hybrid developed by ICAR-Directorate of Mushroom Research (DMR), Solan — India's dedicated mushroom research institute — as part of its breeding programme aimed specifically at reducing the post-harvest surface browning that shortens white button mushroom's market life. It is grown exactly like any other button mushroom strain, spawned into pasteurised compost and cased before fruiting, and is supplied as certified spawn through DMR's own spawn production unit and its authorised distribution network.

Yield & maturity

Maturity period

6–7 weeks to first flush (after 2–3 weeks of composting)

Expected yield

Comparable to or better than S-11/U-3 in ICAR-DMR trials

Actual yield depends on sowing time, soil, irrigation, weather, seed quality and crop management.

Pest & disease considerations

Advantages & considerations

Why farmers may choose it

  • Genuinely improved resistance to browning after harvest — holds its premium white colour longer in the market
  • Backed by ICAR-DMR's own research and certified spawn supply, so provenance and quality are traceable

Things to consider

  • Spawn availability is tied to DMR's production schedule — book in advance rather than expecting off-the-shelf stock year-round
  • Needs the same composting and cool-room infrastructure as any button mushroom strain
