S-11 (Button Mushroom)

One of the most widely cultivated button mushroom strains in India, along with U-3 and imported strains such as Horst H3 — grown commercially in the organised cold-room sector as well as by smaller composting units.

About this variety

S-11 is a widely used commercial hybrid strain of white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) in India, valued for consistent cropping on a well-prepared wheat-straw compost under the cool, controlled conditions button mushroom needs. Like other button strains, it is not grown from true seed but from spawn — grain fully colonised with the mushroom mycelium — spawned into pasteurised compost and cased with a soil-and-lime layer before fruiting.

Sowing & cultivation

  • SpacingStandard compost-bed cropping: 10–15 kg compost/sq.ft of bed area, cased and cropped in the same bed

Yield & maturity

Maturity period

6–7 weeks to first flush (after 2–3 weeks of composting)

Expected yield

10–15 kg fresh mushroom/sq.ft of compost bed

Actual yield depends on sowing time, soil, irrigation, weather, seed quality and crop management.

Pest & disease considerations

Major diseases

  • No special disease resistance claimed; needs careful compost and room hygiene against wet/dry bubble

Advantages & considerations

Why farmers may choose it

  • Consistent, reliable cropping on standard wheat-straw compost
  • Well understood by Indian growers and spawn labs — widely available and widely documented

Things to consider

  • Needs a proper composting set-up and a cooler, controlled fruiting room — not a low-equipment beginner crop the way oyster mushroom is
  • No special disease resistance — good compost pasteurisation and casing hygiene decide the outcome as much as the strain itself
