Why is GT 1 still planted when higher-yielding clones exist?

Because it is dependable. GT 1 gives a stable, medium yield across a very wide range of sites and seasons, tolerates wind and marginal soils, and is less prone to tapping panel dryness. On exposed ridges, marginal land or in the variable north-east, that reliability is worth more than the extra yield of a clone that needs perfect conditions and a full spray programme.
