Overview
Tamil Nadu handles farmer welfare through a registered membership rather than a one-off compensation scheme. It was first notified in 2006 as the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Labourers–Farmers (Social Security and Welfare) Scheme, then relaunched by Government Order No. 265 of the Revenue Department on 10 September 2011 under its current name. Small and marginal farmers, cultivating tenants, agricultural labourers, inland fishing workers and plantation workers aged 18 to 65 enrol once — through the taluk office or online at oap.tn.gov.in — and that registration is what unlocks the relief when something goes wrong.
The cover is broad rather than deep, which suits the risks a farm household actually faces. The notified assistance for accidental death is ₹2 lakh (with ₹5,000 towards funeral costs); for natural death it is ₹50,000. Accident relief, which includes paralysis, is ₹50,000. A separate ₹2,500 funeral payment is made immediately, without a death certificate being required first — the point is that the family has money the same week. A member unable to work through a certified illness can draw ₹1,000 a month until recovery.
The same registration also carries welfare benefits beyond accidents — marriage assistance, education assistance for members' children, and old-age pension — with amounts and conditions set by the board.
