NDA-9
An early variety from NDUAT, Faizabad (Ayodhya), Uttar Pradesh, with smooth corms and very high reported station yields — but one comparison found more oxalate (more itch if undercooked) than other varieties.

About this variety
NDA-9 is an early suran (elephant foot yam) variety from Narendra Deva University of Agriculture and Technology (NDUAT), Kumarganj, Faizabad (Ayodhya), Uttar Pradesh. It has smooth corms and matures in about 180–200 days after planting, which is on the short side for suran. Station trials report very high yields of 60–85 t/ha, though farm yields are usually well below station figures. One published comparison of varieties measured the highest total oxalate in NDA-9 (about 37.6 mg per 100 g at planting), which means it may itch more than some other types if it is undercooked, so cook it thoroughly. It is grown in Uttar Pradesh and nearby plains; ask NDUAT or your KVK about planting material before you plan on it.
Key characteristics
Sowing & cultivation
- SpacingPits of 60 × 60 × 45 cm at about 90 × 90 cm
- Fertilizer25–30 t/ha FYM plus 80:60:100 kg N:P₂O₅:K₂O per hectare in two doses (general suran recommendation)
- HarvestingReady in about 6–7 months, once the leaf and stalk dry down.
Yield & maturity
Maturity period
180–200 days
Expected yield
60–85 t/ha in station trials (farm yields are lower)
Actual yield depends on sowing time, soil, irrigation, weather, seed quality and crop management.
Pest & disease considerations
Major diseases
- Collar rot
- Leaf blight
- Mosaic
Advantages & considerations
Why farmers may choose it
- An early variety, ready in about 180–200 days
- Smooth corms and very high reported station yields
Things to consider
- One comparison measured more oxalate than other varieties, so it may itch more if undercooked — cook thoroughly
- Station yields are higher than what farms usually get; plan on lower farm figures
- Disease reaction is not documented in the sources checked, and planting material must be arranged through NDUAT or your KVK

Frequently asked questions
Is NDA-9 really a 60–85 t/ha variety?
Those are yields reported from station trials, where the crop gets ideal care. Farm yields are usually lower — plan on the 30–40 t/ha range for a well-managed suran crop and treat anything above that as a bonus.
