About this variety
Swagata is a suran (elephant foot yam) variety released in Gujarat by Navsari Agricultural University after the 51st State Seed Sub-Committee meeting at Gandhinagar, and described in the Indian Journal of Horticulture in 2024. It came from a clonal selection out of germplasm collected from Gujarat and other parts of India, as part of the university's programme to find elite suran types for the tribal regions and the rest of Gujarat. Gujarat farmers prefer it for higher productivity, disease tolerance, good corm flesh colour and taste. In a comparison of genotypes it had the highest starch (about 17.9%), good antioxidant activity and the lowest total oxalate, which suggests a less itchy corm. Duration and yield figures were not available in the sources checked. A newer Navsari line, NEFY-25 (released for Gujarat as GEFY-2, "Dangi Suran"), gave a mean of about 49 t/ha, roughly 17% more than Swagata and 31% more than Gajendra in Gujarat trials.

Advantages & considerations
Why farmers may choose it
- A Gujarat-bred variety preferred by local farmers for yield, disease tolerance, flesh colour and taste
- Highest starch and lowest total oxalate among the genotypes compared in one study
Things to consider
- Duration, yield and disease-reaction figures were not available in the sources checked
- A newer Navsari line, NEFY-25 (GEFY-2, Dangi Suran), out-yielded it in Gujarat trials
- Best suited to Gujarat; ask Navsari Agricultural University or your KVK about planting material
