About this variety

Sree Padma is the first suran (elephant foot yam) variety released from Kerala, in 1998 by ICAR-Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI), Thiruvananthapuram. It is a selection from the local germplasm the institute collected in Wayanad district. It is a medium-tall plant (about 78 cm) with a canopy about 123 cm across, a light-green petiole with green markings, and a round (globose) corm with brown skin and cream flesh. It matures in 8–9 months, gave about 42 t/ha on average, and has a recorded potential of about 80 t/ha. CTCRI lists it as having very good cooking quality, and it is reported to show tolerance to collar rot and mosaic disease.

Advantages & considerations

Why farmers may choose it

  • The first suran variety bred for Kerala, with CTCRI backing
  • Round, brown-skinned corm with cream flesh and very good cooking quality
  • Average yield of about 42 t/ha, with a much higher recorded potential

Things to consider

  • A longer crop (8–9 months) than Gajendra, so the plot is tied up longer
  • Recommended mainly for Kerala; check with your KVK before planting elsewhere
