About this variety
CISH J-37 is a jamun selection from ICAR's Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH), Lucknow. In a published comparative physiological study examining sodicity-stress tolerance across several jamun cultivars — including Konkan Bahadoli and Goma Priyanka — CISH J-37 was found to carry the strongest tolerance of the group, a genuinely useful, research-documented trait for growers planting on the sodic and alkaline soils found across parts of Uttar Pradesh and the wider Indo-Gangetic plain, where many other fruit trees, and even other jamun selections, perform noticeably worse.
Key characteristics
Yield & maturity
Maturity period

Expected yield
Good; selected as much for stress tolerance as yield
Actual yield depends on sowing time, soil, irrigation, weather, seed quality and crop management.
Pest & disease considerations
Major diseases
- Documented as the most sodicity-tolerant cultivar in comparative CISH trials
Advantages & considerations
Why farmers may choose it
- Documented as the most sodicity-tolerant jamun cultivar in a direct comparative study — a real, research-backed reason to choose it on a problem-soil site.
- A genuine option for land where sodicity or alkalinity has ruled out other fruit trees entirely.
Things to consider
- Goma Priyanka recorded higher fruit and pulp weight in the same comparative work, so a less sodic site may not need to trade off yield for stress tolerance.
- No seedlessness trait — CISH J-42 is the sister release to consider if reduced seed content matters more than sodicity tolerance.
