Wheat Sowing Guide: Why the First Fortnight of November Decides Your Yield
Sowing date is the single biggest lever on wheat yield in North India — bigger than variety, bigger than fertiliser. Here is what late sowing actually costs you, and how to adjust seed rate when you cannot sow on time.
Ask ten wheat growers in Haryana what raised their yield last year and you will get ten answers about seed, urea and irrigation. Ask what lowered it and almost nobody says the thing that actually did: they sowed in December.
Sowing date is the most powerful, cheapest lever available in wheat — plan it against a crop calendar rather than guessing. It costs nothing to pull. And most seasons, it is the one that gets pulled last — after the paddy is finally cleared, after the combine turns up, after the field dries out.
Why the calendar matters more than the bag
Wheat is a cool-season crop trying to finish its work before an Indian March. Grain filling — the two to three weeks when the plant is actually packing starch into the grain — must happen while temperatures are still moderate.
Push sowing later and grain filling slides into late March and April. Temperatures cross 35°C, the plant shuts down early, and the grain that would have been plump is shrivelled. Agronomists call it terminal heat stress. It is the single largest cause of yield loss in Indian wheat, and it is caused almost entirely by a date on a calendar.
The arithmetic is unusually consistent:

Every week past 25 November costs roughly 1 to 1.5 quintals per hectare. At ₹2,425 per quintal, a two-week delay is about ₹6,000 per hectare — gone before you have bought a single bag of urea.
What to do if you cannot sow on time
Most late sowing is not a choice. The paddy came off late, or the rain did not stop. So the question is not "sow early" — it is "sow late, correctly".
Raise the seed rate
Late-sown wheat tillers poorly. A plant that would have thrown five productive tillers in November throws two in December. You compensate at the front end, with plant population:
- Timely sown (up to 25 Nov): 100 kg/ha
- Late sown (26 Nov – 15 Dec): 125 kg/ha
- Very late (after 15 Dec): 125–150 kg/ha, with row spacing cut to 18 cm
Change the variety, not just the date
A timely-sown variety pushed into a late slot is being asked to do something it was not bred for. Short-duration, heat-tolerant varieties exist precisely for this window — they flower earlier and finish before the heat. Your state agricultural university and local KVK publish a recommended list each season. Use the current one.
Move the nitrogen forward
Late-sown wheat has less time. Front-load it. Apply the full basal dose at sowing and get the first top-dressing on at the crown root initiation stage — do not let it drift.
Do not skip the CRI irrigation
The crown root initiation stage, 20–25 days after sowing, is the single most important irrigation of the entire wheat season. Miss it and you lose more than you will lose to any pest all year. On a late-sown crop, where the plant already has no margin, missing CRI is close to fatal.
The zero-tillage escape route
There is one genuine way out of the late-sowing trap, and it is mechanical.
A zero-till drill or Happy Seeder sows wheat directly into standing paddy stubble — no ploughing, no puddling, no waiting for the field to dry. It removes the entire land-preparation window from the calendar.
That buys you 7 to 10 days. In wheat, 7 to 10 days is 2 to 3 quintals per hectare. It also saves roughly ₹3,000 per hectare in land preparation and around 50 litres of diesel, uses about one irrigation less, and removes any reason at all to burn the residue.
For a farmer who is chronically sowing in the first week of December because the paddy will not clear, zero tillage is not an environmental gesture. It is the highest-return machine on the farm.
