Overview
The tea mosquito bug (Helopeltis) is a slender, long-legged sap-sucking bug — mosquito-like in build — that is a major pest of tea, and also of guava, cashew and several other crops. Both the adults and the nymphs feed on the tender shoots, young leaves and developing fruit by pushing in their stylets and injecting a toxic saliva.
Each feeding puncture kills a small patch of tissue, leaving a dark brown to black, sunken, corky spot. As the shoot grows these spots multiply and the tender flush is blighted, curling, drying and dying back; on guava and cashew the fruit becomes scabbed and cracked with corky feeding lesions. The bug prefers cool, humid, shaded conditions, so it is worst in the flush periods and in dense, shaded plantations.
How to identify it
- Dark brown to black, sunken, corky spots on the tender shoots, young leaves and fruit — one per feeding puncture, multiplying over time.
- Slender, long-legged, mosquito-like bugs on the flush, quick to move and drop off when disturbed.

Organic & cultural control
- Regulate shade and prune to open the canopy — the bug favours dense, humid shade, so a more open, airy plantation suffers less.
- Keep the plantation and its surroundings free of alternate host weeds and plants that harbour the bug.
- Spray neem on the tender flush to deter feeding, and conserve natural enemies (predatory bugs, spiders).
- Time flush/plucking rounds and cultural operations to reduce the continuous tender growth the bug depends on.
Chemical control
- Where the bug is damaging the flush, use a CIB&RC-registered insecticide for the crop, directed at the tender new growth where the bug feeds.
- Time sprays to protect each flush and rotate insecticide groups to avoid resistance.
- On tea and edible fruit, strictly observe the pre-harvest/plucking interval on the label.
