If you want to grow your own Hisar Gairic seed
Carrot is a two-stage crop. In the first stage you grow the root. In the second stage you replant the best roots, called stecklings, and they flower and set seed. Hisar Gairic is open-pollinated, so seed from healthy plants stays close to type.
A CCS HAU trial found that a paired-row layout at 60 x 45 cm gave the highest seed yield of 7.62 q/ha, and that 8 cm stecklings did best, at 7.01 q/ha. These are one university's trial numbers, so treat them as a starting point.
Choose stecklings with a long, smooth root, an even colour and no forking. Keep the seed plot away from wild carrot and from other carrot varieties, because carrot crosses easily.
Can you keep your own planting material?
This is an open-pollinated variety, so seed from a healthy crop of your own can be sown again. Keep seed only from disease-free plants, dry it properly, store it cool and dry, and bring in fresh certified seed every three to four years so the variety does not drift.
