The classic temperate European type — cylindrical, blunt-tipped, bright orange, sweet, near-coreless roots. It needs cool weather to colour and does not bolt easily, but yields poorly in the warm plains and is grown mainly in the hills.

About this variety

Nantes (and its "Early Nantes" strains) is the standard temperate, European-type carrot — cylindrical with a blunt tip, bright orange skin and flesh, sweet, crisp and with almost no distinct core. It needs genuine cool weather (about 15–21°C) to develop its colour and sweetness, so in India it is a hill crop, grown in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kashmir and the Nilgiris and sown in spring. It does not bolt readily, but in the warm plains it stays pale, small and low-yielding — the plains need an Asiatic red type instead.
