About this variety
HG 870 is a guar from CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, for Haryana. The national notified list gives release year 2009 and notification S.O. 733(E) of 1 April 2010. The Directorate of Pulses Development table gives 85 to 95 days and 2,000 to 2,200 kg/ha, and moderate resistance to Alternaria leaf blight, bacterial leaf blight and root rot. In a West Godavari trial (2015-16) it had the shortest crop duration of 14 cultivars, 92.44 days, with 50% flowering at 19.44 days, but gave 2.62 kg of pods and 1.48 kg of seed a plot, below the trial mean of 3.17 and 1.57 kg. We found no gum figure, and the practice below is the crop-level practice for guar.
Should you pick this variety?
Choose HG 870 if you farm in Haryana and want a short guar with a disease rating. DPD lists 85 to 95 days, 2,000 to 2,200 kg/ha, and moderate resistance to Alternaria leaf blight, bacterial leaf blight and root rot, which is a fuller disease listing than most older guars have. It is the one DPD guar with the 2,000 to 2,200 range besides HG 2-20. Be careful with that figure. The 26 coordinated trials from 2018 to 2021 averaged only 1,047 to 1,069 kg/ha for the checks, and HG 870 was not one of them. In a West Godavari trial it was the shortest crop of 14 but gave only 1.48 kg of seed a plot against a mean of 1.57. Plan on less than DPD's top range.
Key characteristics
Sowing & cultivation
- Sowing timeFirst fortnight of July at the monsoon's onset for a rainfed crop; a delay after 15 July cuts yield (crop-level advice).
- Seed rateAbout 15 kg/ha for guar in general (ICAR-based package); no separate rate is published for HG 870. Sow in rows and inoculate the seed with rhizobium.
- Spacing45 to 50 cm between rows and 10 cm between plants for a branched type (crop-level advice).

Pest & disease considerations
Advantages & considerations
Why farmers may choose it
- Short, 85 to 95 days, and the shortest of 14 cultivars in the West Godavari trial (92.44 days).
- A fuller disease listing than most older guars: moderate resistance to Alternaria, bacterial blight and root rot (DPD).
- DPD lists 2,000 to 2,200 kg/ha, the top range in its guar table.
Things to consider
- In the West Godavari trial its seed yield (1.48 kg a plot) and pod yield (2.62 kg) were below the trial means.
- Listed for Haryana only; no coordinated-trial figures and no gum figure were found.
- The 2,000 to 2,200 kg/ha range is well above what the 2018 to 2021 trials gave the check varieties.

A short crop that gave less seed in one trial
The West Godavari trial compared 14 cultivars in 2015-16. HG 870 matured in 92.44 days, the shortest, on par with HG 563 (93.03), RGC 936 (93.09), RGC 1038 (93.26) and HG 884 (93.71). The longest was HG 365 at 102.15 days, which also gave the most seed (1.85 kg a plot). The authors note that varieties that spent more days between flowering and pod drying, and started flowering early, did better, while HG 870 had a short 75.50-day filling period and a seed yield of 1.48 kg, in the lowest group.
This is one station in Andhra Pradesh, far from Haryana where HG 870 is listed, so it is a caution, not a verdict. The reading for you is simple: a shorter crop buys escape from a dry end of season, but it can give up seed weight. If you sow HG 870 in Haryana, sow on the first good rain and weigh the seed against your last variety before you scale up.
Can you save seed from this crop?
This is an open-pollinated variety, so seed from a healthy crop of your own can be sown again. Keep seed only from disease-free plants, dry it properly, store it cool and dry, and bring in fresh certified seed every three to four years so the variety does not drift.

Frequently asked questions
What is HG 870?
A guar from CCS HAU Hisar for Haryana, notified on 1 April 2010 (S.O. 733(E)). DPD lists 85 to 95 days and 2,000 to 2,200 kg/ha, with moderate resistance to Alternaria leaf blight, bacterial leaf blight and root rot.
Can I grow HG 870 outside Haryana?
DPD lists it for Haryana only. In a West Godavari trial in Andhra Pradesh it was the shortest crop but gave less seed than the trial mean. Try a small strip first and ask your KVK about a local trial.
Is the 2,000 to 2,200 kg/ha figure realistic?
It is DPD's listing range. We found no coordinated-trial mean for HG 870. In the 2018 to 2021 trials the check varieties averaged 1,047 to 1,069 kg/ha on rainfed land. Treat 2,000 as the reward of a very good year on irrigated or well-watered land.
Why do HG 870 and HG 884 share a notification number?
The national list notifies both under S.O. 733(E) dated 1 April 2010, with release years 2009 for HG 870 and 2008 for HG 884. One gazette notice can carry several varieties. Check the variety name on the tag, not the notification number.
