About this variety
RGC-1033, named Guar Kunjal, is a guar from the Agricultural Research Station, Durgapura, Rajasthan, released in 2010 for Rajasthan. The Directorate of Pulses Development table gives 95 to 100 days, 1,500 to 2,000 kg/ha, moderate resistance to Alternaria leaf blight, tolerance to bacterial leaf blight and root rot, and gum content of 29.90 to 31.50%. In the 2018 to 2021 coordinated trials it was a national check. There it gave 29.32% gum, 3,133 cp viscosity and 26.27% protein, was moderately resistant to bacterial leaf blight and Alternaria blight, and resistant to root rot. The 2015 national notified list we read has no entry under RGC-1033 or Guar Kunjal. The practice below is the crop-level practice for guar.
Should you pick this variety?
Choose RGC-1033 (Guar Kunjal) if you farm rainfed guar in Rajasthan and want the variety whose seed is easiest to find. ICAR's breeder-seed data puts it at 14.9 to 62.0% of the indent in 7 of 8 years. DPD gives 1,500 to 2,000 kg/ha, 95 to 100 days and 29.90 to 31.50% gum. Plan on less than DPD's top figure. As the check variety in 26 coordinated trials from 2018 to 2021 it averaged 1,069 kg/ha, and the newer Karan Guar 14 beat it by 14.3%. Karan Guar 14 also had a little more gum (30.2% against 29.32%). RGC-1033 is a safe, well-known choice, not the newest.
Key characteristics
Sowing & cultivation
- Sowing timeFirst fortnight of July at the monsoon's onset for a rainfed crop; a delay after 15 July cuts yield (crop-level advice).
- Seed rateAbout 15 kg/ha for guar in general (ICAR-based package); no separate rate is published for RGC-1033. Sow in rows and inoculate the seed with rhizobium.
- Spacing45 to 50 cm between rows and 10 cm between plants for a branched type (crop-level advice).
Yield & maturity
Maturity period
95 to 100 days (DPD); 96.10 days to harvest in a West Godavari trial
Expected yield
1,500 to 2,000 kg/ha (DPD); 1,069 kg/ha average as the check in 26 coordinated trials, 2018 to 2021 (IJAS 2023)
Actual yield depends on sowing time, soil, irrigation, weather, seed quality and crop management.
Pest & disease considerations
Advantages & considerations
Why farmers may choose it
- Seed is easy to find: 14.9 to 62.0% of ICAR's breeder-seed indent in 7 of 8 years.
- A national check in the 2018 to 2021 trials, so a lot of comparison data exists for it.
- Resistant to root rot and moderately resistant to bacterial and Alternaria blight in the coordinated trials.
Things to consider
- Its 1,069 kg/ha trial average is well below DPD's 1,500 to 2,000 kg/ha.
- Karan Guar 14 out-yielded it by 14.3% and had slightly more gum and viscosity.
- DPD says tolerant to bacterial blight; the IJAS trials rate it moderately resistant.

Two yield numbers for one variety: which to plan on
DPD lists RGC-1033 at 1,500 to 2,000 kg/ha. The IJAS paper on Karan Guar 14 used RGC 1033 as a check in 26 coordinated trials and got 993 kg/ha in 2018, 1,049 in 2019, 1,116 in 2020 and 1,135 in 2021, a weighted mean of 1,069. The trials ran on rainfed land at centres from Bikaner and Jodhpur to Gwalior and Pandharpur. A DPD range is a target under good management, and a trial mean is what the variety did across many fields and seasons.
For a rainfed budget, start from about 1,000 to 1,100 kg/ha and treat 1,500 or more as the reward for a good monsoon, early sowing and clean fields. In a Mojerla (Telangana) kharif 2014 trial it gave 18.92 q/ha of seed, and in a West Godavari trial it was among the top seed yielders. Both are single-season station trials, so test a strip before you put the whole farm under it.
Can you save seed from this crop?
This is an open-pollinated variety, so seed from a healthy crop of your own can be sown again. Keep seed only from disease-free plants, dry it properly, store it cool and dry, and bring in fresh certified seed every three to four years so the variety does not drift.

Frequently asked questions
What is RGC-1033 and what is Guar Kunjal?
They are the same variety. DPD lists it as Guar Kunjal (RGC 1033), released in 2010 for Rajasthan from the Durgapura station. Check the tag for either name.
How much gum does RGC-1033 have?
DPD gives 29.90 to 31.50%. In the coordinated trials its gum was 29.32% with a viscosity of 3,133 cp, against 30.2% and 3,412 cp for Karan Guar 14. The difference is small, and your buyer's own test settles the price.
Is RGC-1033 better than HG 2-20?
The trials do not say so. In the 26 coordinated trials the weighted means were 1,069 kg/ha for RGC 1033 and 1,067 for HG 2-20, almost equal. HG 2-20 was rated resistant to Alternaria blight and RGC 1033 only moderately resistant. At Mojerla HG 2-20 gave 23.40 q/ha of seed against 18.92. Choose by the seed you can get and your state.
Why is RGC-1033 missing from the national notified list?
We could not tell. The 2015 list we read has no entry under RGC-1033 or Guar Kunjal, although DPD gives 2010 and the variety is a national check. It may be notified under another name or later. Ask for the notification number from the seed seller or your KVK.
