About this variety
RGC-1003 is a guar from the Agricultural Research Station, Durgapura, Rajasthan. The national notified list gives release year 1997 and notification S.O. 425(E) of 8 June 1999, the same notification that carries RGC-986. The Directorate of Pulses Development table gives 90 to 95 days and 1,100 to 1,200 kg/ha for Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, and describes it as early maturing, medium in height, with green leaves and large grain. In a West Godavari trial (2015-16) it took 95.77 days to harvest and gave 1.62 kg of seed a plot, among the top seed yielders. We found no disease rating, and the practice below is the crop-level practice for guar.
Should you pick this variety?
Choose RGC-1003 if you want an earlier guar, 90 to 95 days, with large grain, in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh or Uttar Pradesh. DPD calls it early maturing, medium height with green leaves, at 1,100 to 1,200 kg/ha. It is a 1997 release, the oldest of these four, and its yield listing is the lowest of the four in DPD's table: HG 870 is 2,000 to 2,200, RGC-1033 is 1,500 to 2,000 and HG 884 is 1,400 to 1,500. ICAR's breeder-seed review does not name it among the leading varieties. So take it for earliness and grain size if you can find clean seed, and try a strip beside RGC-1033 first.

Sowing & cultivation
- Sowing timeFirst fortnight of July at the monsoon's onset for a rainfed crop; a delay after 15 July cuts yield (crop-level advice).

- Spacing45 to 50 cm between rows and 10 cm between plants for a branched type (crop-level advice).

Advantages & considerations
Why farmers may choose it
- Early maturing at 90 to 95 days, with large grain (DPD).
- Listed for four states: Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
- Among the top seed yielders in a West Godavari trial (1.62 kg a plot).
Things to consider
- The oldest listing, and the lowest yield range in DPD's table (1,100 to 1,200 kg/ha).
- No disease rating, and no recent coordinated-trial figures were found.
- Not named among the leading varieties in ICAR's breeder-seed review, so seed may be harder to find.

Early and large-grained: what that is worth to you
DPD's two notes on RGC-1003 are early maturity (90 to 95 days) and large grain. Earliness is worth money in a short-rain year, because a crop that finishes sooner escapes the end-of-season dry spell, and it frees the field for a rabi crop sooner. In the West Godavari trial it took 95.77 days, about the middle of 14 cultivars (92.44 to 102.15 days), so the early label is relative to the long-duration guars, not a record.
Large grain does not by itself mean more gum, which depends on the endosperm share and the variety, and no gum figure is published for RGC-1003 in the sources read. Ask your buyer how he prices the seed, and sow a strip of RGC-1003 beside RGC-1033 to compare weight and days on your own land.
Can you save seed from this crop?
This is an open-pollinated variety, so seed from a healthy crop of your own can be sown again. Keep seed only from disease-free plants, dry it properly, store it cool and dry, and bring in fresh certified seed every three to four years so the variety does not drift.

Frequently asked questions
What is RGC-1003?
A guar from the Durgapura station in Rajasthan, released in 1997 and notified on 8 June 1999. DPD lists it as early maturing, 90 to 95 days, with large grain, at 1,100 to 1,200 kg/ha.
In which states is RGC-1003 recommended?
DPD lists Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. We found no trial from other states.
Is RGC-1003 the same as RGC-986?
No. They are separate varieties from the same station, notified together under S.O. 425(E) on 8 June 1999. DPD calls RGC-986 late and tall for irrigated, better soils, at 110 to 115 days, so it is the opposite type.
Does RGC-1003 yield as much as newer guar?
DPD lists it at 1,100 to 1,200 kg/ha, below RGC-1033 (1,500 to 2,000), HG 884 (1,400 to 1,500) and HG 870 (2,000 to 2,200). These are listing ranges, not a head-to-head trial. In the West Godavari trial its seed yield was among the top group.
