About this variety

HG 884 is a guar from CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. The national notified list gives release year 2008 and notification S.O. 733(E) of 1 April 2010. The Directorate of Pulses Development table gives 2010, Haryana, Gujarat and Rajasthan, 90 to 95 days and 1,400 to 1,500 kg/ha, and describes a high-yielding, medium-early variety with 30 to 32% gum and 2,000 to 3,500 cP viscosity. In a West Godavari trial (2015-16) it flowered early, took 93.71 days to harvest and gave 3.86 kg of pods a plot but 1.48 kg of seed. At Mojerla, Telangana (kharif 2014) it gave 15.14 q/ha of seed, with the highest harvest index (79.10%) of 15 cultivars. We found no disease rating, and the practice below is the crop-level practice for guar.

Should you pick this variety?

Choose HG 884 if you farm in Haryana, Gujarat or Rajasthan and want a medium-early guar sold on gum. DPD lists 90 to 95 days, 1,400 to 1,500 kg/ha and 30 to 32% gum with a viscosity of 2,000 to 3,500 cP. Treat the gum range with care, because it is DPD's figure with no trial behind it in the sources read, while the 2018 to 2021 trials gave 29.3 to 30.2% for the varieties they measured. Also look at seed weight, not pod weight. In one trial HG 884 gave heavy pods but little seed. If you farm in Haryana, HG 870 (2,000 to 2,200 kg/ha in DPD) is the other 2010 name to compare.

Sowing & cultivation

  • Sowing timeFirst fortnight of July at the monsoon's onset for a rainfed crop; a delay after 15 July cuts yield (crop-level advice).
  • Seed rateAbout 15 kg/ha for guar in general (ICAR-based package); no separate rate is published for HG 884. Sow in rows and inoculate the seed with rhizobium.
  • Spacing45 to 50 cm between rows and 10 cm between plants for a branched type (crop-level advice).

Things to consider

  • In the West Godavari trial its seed yield was in the lowest group (1.48 kg a plot) although its pod yield was near the top.
  • The 30 to 32% gum range has no trial behind it in the sources read; the 2018 to 2021 trials measured 29.3 to 30.2% for other varieties.

Pod weight is not seed weight

Guar for gum is sold by the seed, so the number that matters is seed weight. In the West Godavari trial HG 884 gave 3.86 kg of pods a plot, on par with the best (HG 365 at 3.89), but only 1.48 kg of seed, in the lowest group of 14. By our arithmetic that is about 38% of pod weight as seed, against about 53% for RGC 1033 (1.82 of 3.45 kg) and about 49% for RGC 1003.

The Mojerla trial points the other way. There HG 884 had a seed-to-pod ratio of 50.52%, the second highest of 15, and the highest harvest index (79.10%), though a modest seed yield of 15.14 q/ha against 18.92 for RGC 1033 and 23.40 for HG 2-20, with a small 100-seed weight of 3.86 g. The two trials disagree on shelling, so the sensible step is to harvest a test strip, shell it and weigh the seed before you buy for the whole farm.

Can you save seed from this crop?

This is an open-pollinated variety, so seed from a healthy crop of your own can be sown again. Keep seed only from disease-free plants, dry it properly, store it cool and dry, and bring in fresh certified seed every three to four years so the variety does not drift.

Frequently asked questions

What is HG 884?

A guar from CCS HAU Hisar, notified on 1 April 2010 (S.O. 733(E)). DPD lists it for Haryana, Gujarat and Rajasthan at 90 to 95 days and 1,400 to 1,500 kg/ha, with 30 to 32% gum.

Is the 30 to 32% gum figure reliable?

It is DPD's listing and we found no trial that measured it. The 2018 to 2021 coordinated trials measured 29.32 to 29.76% for the check varieties and 30.2% for Karan Guar 14. Ask your buyer to test your own lot.

Why do the notified list and DPD give different years for HG 884?

The national notified list gives release year 2008 and notification on 1 April 2010 (S.O. 733(E)). DPD's table gives 2010, which is the notification year. Both are consistent with a 2008 release and a 2010 gazette notice.

HG 884 or HG 870 for Haryana?

DPD lists HG 870 at 85 to 95 days and 2,000 to 2,200 kg/ha for Haryana, and HG 884 at 90 to 95 days and 1,400 to 1,500 kg/ha for Haryana, Gujarat and Rajasthan. On those lines HG 870 yields more and is shorter. In the West Godavari trial the two gave the same seed weight (1.48 kg a plot). Sow a strip of each.
