About this variety
Indira Kulthi-1 is a horse gram for Chhattisgarh. The Indira prefix points to Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur, but the sources we read name only Chhattisgarh. The national notified list carries it as Indira Kulthi-1 (IKGH-01-01), release year 2010, notified on 10 October 2011 under S.O. 2326(E). The Directorate of Pulses Development table lists it as Indira Kulthi 1 (IKGH-05-01), 2011, Chhattisgarh, 95 days and 800 kg/ha, with black seed and a long pod, tolerant to yellow mosaic virus. Vikaspedia, quoting DPD, names it as Chhattisgarh's recommended horse gram with the code IKGH01-01. We found no trial paper, so the practice below is the crop-level practice from the DPD package.
Should you pick this variety?
Choose Indira Kulthi-1 if you farm horse gram in Chhattisgarh and want the state's named variety, with black seed, a long pod and tolerance to yellow mosaic, in about 95 days. DPD lists 800 kg/ha and Vikaspedia names it as Chhattisgarh's recommended horse gram. The data are thin: one yield figure, one disease note, and a code that the sources give two ways. The notified list and Vikaspedia write IKGH-01-01, while DPD writes IKGH-05-01. Ask the seed seller for the notification number and the code on the tag, and check it against S.O. 2326(E).
Key characteristics
Sowing & cultivation
- Sowing timeNo sowing date is published for Indira Kulthi-1. DPD's package says Madhya Pradesh grows horse gram as a rabi crop and the main season elsewhere is late August to November; ask your KVK for the local date.
- Seed rateLine sowing 25 to 30 kg/ha for a grain crop, about 40 kg/ha if broadcast for grain and fodder (DPD package); no separate rate is published for Indira Kulthi-1. Treat the seed with carbendazim at 2 g a kg, then with Rhizobium and PSB culture at 5 to 7 g a kg.

Soil & climate
Soil
- Suitable soil
- Light to heavy soils free from alkalinity; it is usually grown on poor, well-drained land (DPD package)
Climate
- Climate
- Warm, dry weather at 25 to 30 °C suits it; it does not grow well at high altitudes where the climate is cool and wet, and heavy rain in the early stage hurts nodule formation (DPD package).
Yield & maturity
Maturity period
95 days (DPD arid legumes table)
Expected yield
800 kg/ha (DPD)
Actual yield depends on sowing time, soil, irrigation, weather, seed quality and crop management.
Pest & disease considerations
Major diseases
Management notes
- Weeding: one early weeding or hoeing is enough because the crop grows thick; pendimethalin 0.75 to 1 kg a hectare before emergence, then one hand weeding at 20 to 25 days (DPD package).
- Do not sow into infected soil early: for root rot, treat the seed with 2 g of captan or carbendazim per kg and avoid early sowing in infested fields.
Advantages & considerations
Why farmers may choose it
- The recommended horse gram for Chhattisgarh in Vikaspedia and DPD.
- Black seed and a long pod, with tolerance to yellow mosaic virus.
- About 95 days, a medium-length season.
Things to consider
- One yield figure (800 kg/ha) and one disease note, from one table; no trial paper was found.
- The sources write two codes, IKGH-01-01 and IKGH-05-01, and two years, 2010 and 2011.
- Listed for Chhattisgarh only.

Two codes, two years: check the tag against the notification
Three sources describe Indira Kulthi-1 and they do not agree on its code. The national notified list writes IKGH-01-01 with release year 2010 and notification on 10 October 2011 (S.O. 2326(E)). Vikaspedia writes IKGH01-01. The DPD table writes IKGH-05-01 and year 2011. Two of the three agree on 01-01, so that is the better reading, and 2011 is the year of the gazette notice.
You do not have to settle it to buy safely. Ask the seller for the variety name, the certification tag with the lot number, and the producer, which should be a state university or a seed agency it supplies. If the tag names a different code, ask your KVK or the state seed agency which is current before you buy for the whole field.
Can you save seed from this crop?
This is a released open-pollinated variety, not a hybrid, and horse gram sets its own seed, so seed saved from healthy plants grows into the same type. Keep it apart from other horse gram and pick the pods together when most are yellowish brown.
