G-48 (Kranti)

The workhorse WIMCO/FRI-selected clone across the north-Indian poplar belt — straight, fast-growing, and the one written into most WIMCO and Trident buy-back agreements for plywood and peeler-log supply. Also sold in nurseries as "Kranti".

Release
A WIMCO-selected Populus deltoides clone released through FRI Dehradun; the most widely planted farm-poplar clone in north India

About this variety

G-48 (also sold as Kranti) is a Populus deltoides clone selected and multiplied by WIMCO Seedlings and released through the Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun. It has been the mainstay of the north-Indian farm-poplar sector since the 1980s and is the clone written into the largest share of WIMCO and Trident buy-back agreements in Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh. Sold as one-year-old bare-root Entire Transplants (ETPs) for planting in the leafless winter, it gives straight boles, uniform girth growth, and good peeler-grade log recovery on a 5–6 year rotation under assured irrigation.

Sowing & cultivation

  • Spacing5 × 4 m (about 200 trees/acre) for the standard peeler block; 5 × 5 m (160/acre) for longer intercropping

Yield & maturity

Maturity period

5–6 year rotation to clear-felling

Expected yield

High; good peeler-grade log recovery under assured irrigation

Actual yield depends on sowing time, soil, irrigation, weather, seed quality and crop management.

Pest & disease considerations

Advantages & considerations

Why farmers may choose it

  • Straight, uniform boles that peel cleanly for plywood and matchbox veneer
  • Well-established buy-back acceptance at WIMCO, Trident, Greenply and most north-Indian plywood units
  • Familiar to nurseries and farmers — planting stock is reliably available across the poplar belt

Things to consider

  • Needs assured canal or tubewell irrigation, especially through the first two summers — poor performance on rainfed dry land
  • Susceptible to poplar defoliator (Clostera cupreata) and to Melampsora leaf rust in dense, humid plantings; regular monitoring is essential
