A WIMCO-selected Populus deltoides clone for the tarai and adjoining Indo-Gangetic plain

About this variety

Uday is a Populus deltoides clone selected and released by WIMCO Seedlings for farm plantings across the Uttarakhand tarai and adjoining Uttar Pradesh. Along with G-48, Bahar and the W-series, it is one of the clones supplied under WIMCO buy-back agreements for the plywood, matchbox and packing-wood industries. Planted as bare-root Entire Transplants (ETPs) in the leafless winter, it gives straight, clean-stem trees suited to peeler-log grading at felling on a 5–7 year rotation.

Pest & disease considerations

Advantages & considerations

Why farmers may choose it

  • Straight bole with clean early growth — suits peeler-log grading
  • Accepted at WIMCO buy-back mills alongside G-48
  • Performs well in the Uttarakhand tarai and northern UP alluvial belt

Things to consider

  • Assured irrigation is essential — like all farm poplar, it under-performs on rainfed dry land
  • Susceptible to poplar defoliator and leaf rust in dense stands
