About this variety

The Punjab Forest Research Institute (PFRI) at Hoshiarpur has released a series of numbered Populus deltoides clones for farm-forestry in Punjab and neighbouring Haryana. These are supplied through PFRI-linked nurseries and taken up mainly by farmers who plant poplar outside a company buy-back agreement and sell the felled logs directly to local plywood, peeler and packing-wood units. Planted as bare-root Entire Transplants (ETPs) in the leafless winter on a 5–7 year rotation, with the same clone-choice and irrigation discipline as WIMCO plantings.

Pest & disease considerations

Advantages & considerations

Why farmers may choose it

  • State-institute-released and screened for Punjab conditions
  • Available to farmers outside company buy-back arrangements
  • Backed by PFRI extension advice and district-level nurseries

Things to consider

  • Without a formal buy-back agreement, the final rupee return depends more heavily on local plywood/peeling-unit demand at felling
  • Confirm which specific PFRI clone number is currently being supplied and which local mills accept it
